2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 4wd has 6 lug chrome clad wheels. I'm looking to find the proper center caps. I have a set that fits except the nut covers don't engage to the lug nuts. What is the deal?

Lug nut covers are a bit shy of threading onto the lug nuts, maybe they are wrong? They measure close to 1.125".I have not been able to find specific info, so hopefully you can help.

the lugs should have a flat washer and a spring washer the lug should have a long cylinder shape on one end that is tapered to tighten up the wheel the washers hold the plastic hubs in place you might try a wrecking yard or a dealer for them

The black lug nuts are the lug nut cover that you have to unscrew off the lug nut it self to remove the wheel cover. Once the wheel cove is off you'll see the real lug nuts holding the wheel in place, note do not over torque the plastic lug nut cover when re installing the wheel cover. The plastics are know to crack and will not hold the wheel cover on the wheel any more cause you to lose them on the hy way. Good luck and be safe, oh and the plastic lug nut cover is attached to the wheel cover so do not try to separate them from the wheel cover.

SOURCE: wheel nuts on back wheel of 06 ford focus stripped.

Hi Ray,

I put in some time at an auto salvage yard. Aluminum wheels were big sellers and not something we wanted to damage.

When the lug nuts needed some persuading, we got out the high impact 12 pt deep sockets.

First try we used the correct size.

If they were stripped, one size smaller. We hammer them on to the lug and use a breaker bar with a pipe extension.

The only real problems we had were getting the lug nuts out of the sockets.

Good luck and best regards,
Mike

Good Evening, this is something I run across alot and mainly it tends to be the hubcaps. And I would first off try to remove the hubcap first an drive it and see if that is the issue, if you still have a rattling noise then investigate further maybe a sway bar link or such. But always look at the obvious first, usually it is something minor that can be overlooked. Take your lug wrench and loosen all the plastic caps and once you have them all loose the hubcap will come off. Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Joey

How do you remove the tire off the 2008 Dodge Charger - can't even get the lug nuts off...nothing fits

you should have a lug nut wrench in the trunk with located with the tire jack that is the proper size for the lug nuts.if you have the original wheel nuts.you turn the wrench counter clockwise to remove them from the car.if they are chrome caps over regular steel wheel nuts then the rust could change the size of the required wrench.size.if you have chrysler road side assitance(3year assitance)then they can get you a tow truck to change the tire if you call the 1-800 # if it hasn`t been over 3 years.other wise you may have to have it towed to a shop.

How do I remove a hubcap from a 2008 Chevy Cobalt. Do I need to remove all of the lug nuts or the center cap?

most hubcaps are springclip loaded! some are mounted inside the center cap! some are held on by the lug nuts! pull the center cap first, and look for a screw that holds it on! if not, then remove the lug nuts!

Can not remove lug nut caps 2003 x -type jaguar

I have an 04 xj8. the lug nuts are a good bad example of half baked engineering. the lug nuts are fabricated from ugly steel with an 11/16 hex end. to beautify this, Jaguar overlays the nut end with a stainless steel 3/4 inch cap, crimped to the nut. On top of this, the nut is to be torqued to 90+ ft-lb! The only way to remove the lug nut without damage is with a SIX POINT socket and a breaker bar or an impact wrench. Using a 12 point socket will deform the cap, causing the wrench to spin on the cap and or the cap to spin on the nut itself. If that has happened, it is possible to recover using a 15 oz or thereabouts ball peen hammer and a deep 3/4 inch impact socket (the black ones). Line up the socket to the cap, doing a best guess to where the flats are and give the socket a light blow. Keep trying that until the socket seems to stick on, then hit it harder. Eventually you will find the right point and the socket will go on and reform the cap. Then a breaker bar can remove the cap/nut. New assemblies can be had for about $6 from "partsbin" or "autohausaz".

Front wheel lugs are breaking

Hello, Are you using the factory wheels? If you are using aftermarket wheels, the wheel center might not be fitting snugly on the hub like it should causing the wheel to move slightly. The bolts aren't the only thing you need to keep the wheel centered. If the wheel starts moving up and down it will eventually break the studs.
If you find this information to be correct would you please enter a "fixya" rating.

I can't get my hubcaps off!

There are three basic kind:
1 has a center cap that hides the lug nuts beneath the cap. These usually have a small slot in them to allow a flat head screwdriver to be inserted in them and pop the cover off which is retained be tension created by metal prongs.

2 There is also a type that has plastic decorative lugs that screw over the actual metal lug nuts. In this case just unscrew all visible lugs and the cover will come off exposing the actual rim and metal lug nuts.

3 This is the oldest style that has now lug nuts present and is held on by tension like example one except that the prongs holding this one on is along the outer perimeter of the cap. To remove this type you insert a flat head screw driver between the hubcap and the actual steel rim and pry off working around the perimeter of the cap as you go. Replacement of this hub cap requires force to be applied at the perimeter as application to the center will either not complete the process or more than not result in a broken hubcap.

Hope this helps.
