There's several ways to improve engine performance.
You can change internal engine parts(crankshaft, camshaft, piston, rods, valves, gasket, block) the air intake(filter, piping) the exhaust, turbocharging (although i don't know how good it would be since it is an aspirated engine) and there are more.
This is something that requires money, time and expertise.
You can do some of the modifications by yourself, you can start by upgrading your air intake, but other modifications require engineering expertise to be sure what the engine can still handle and how can it be upgraded.
No not necessory but u must have it tested for leaks and make sure it is not clogged internally or externally so u have good flow of coolent inside and no restrictions to air flow , if cooling system is corrosion free inside of radiator should be ok.
that means you have an oil leak, the bad news is that the subaru is known for leaking head gaskets,it may be valve cover gaskets as well, you will have to jack up the car and take a look heres a diagram to help you locate the head gasket and valve cover gasket.there a gasket on each side of the engine.hope this helps.
Oil leaking from old valve cover gaskets is common on Subaru engines. Once the plugs get oil on them it's best to replace the gasket, wires and plugs. Since that's been done, the next step would be a scan of live data to see what fuel trims and oxygen sensors and MAF sensor readings are. Also, a fuel pressure test. Until you do that, you really don't know what's going on. Don't replace any more parts until you get it diagnosed.
probably leaking rocker cover gasket ,oil slowly lands on exhaust, ive got one and had exactly the same symptoms and rocker cover gaskets were the issue
Is it a vent to air or recirculating one. Also it depends on manufacture, some are quieter than others, higher boost pressure will also make it sound louder but other factors are involved with this so I should take advise from your local shop.
