SOURCE: Hard Shifting after highway driving (1997 Chevrolet Tahoe)?
The problem sounds like your kick down cable has gone bad. There should be a cable that runs from the transmission to the linkage on the TBI(i'm assuming it is a TBI[Throttle Body Injection]) At the throttle bracket, it is the lowest cable. It should have a little plastic box and you should be able to push on the button and slide the little plastic piece in or out of the box. This will adjust your shift points, being plastic, the cable likes to slip if it gets old. Also if you have book or have access to one it should tell you how to locate and check it but usually you have to replace them once they start to slip, the one I got for my 1992 was only like 28 dollars so it's not to bad just a real pain.

Ok if this is going on 9 out of 10 times it is from the switch from your brake deppresion sen- under the dash. comman problem with these models.
SOURCE: shifts hard from 1st to second gear and second to third.
it could be your fuel regulator located on the top of the right side of the engine a c clip holds it on and it has an 1/8 line runing to the top it tends to set off alot of sensors its about 68 dollars

It sound dumb, but check if both battery posts are OK. Pull on both of them one after the other to make sure they wont budge at all. Cause i had this problem once where the negative post had broken, but inside the battery where the post and the plates that make up the battery's cells become one. But since the post was still sitting in the battery, it touched just enough to give the car juice to start and all, but when i hit a big enough bump, the post jumped up so the car had no more ground, and with no ground to work with, the spark plugs can't make any fire so the engine dies apparently for no reason. So even if it sound weird or dumb, check that out first cause it would be the thing that makes you search the longest. If everything regarding the battery is fine, then i'm guessing a problem with a body ground or grounding strap somewhere. Might either be the grounds regarding the engine that give it the possibility to fire and such, or might be the grounds and/or fuses and connectors that make the car's onboard computer work.
