Automatic transmission 1998 Subaru Forester. I drained the fluid and put new in. Now it is full to the top of the dip stick spout but acts like it isn't getting down to the pan.

Could the filter be plugging it?

Did you drop the pan to change the filter? if you drained the fluid and you can get the stick into the tube all the way. i would say the tube is not clogged. you should know how much you took out and the trany only holds so much. check the manual for the correct type and amount. if the fluid is over full that is a problem and will need to remove some. when i add fluid i put in a couple quarts and start the car and cycle the fluid only a couple seconds 15 to 30 not mins or hours the turn off add another till i think its close to what i took out. start car cycle some more repeat till you think your close within a quart to being full. at that point you can keep the car ruuning and check the fluid and keep checking the mark on the stick. if it wont go down the tube. you may have something blocking the tube and removing the pan again or tube to see whats blocking the tube is your only option.

Trying to locate spout to add tran fluid or gear oil

  • If this is a manual transmission you will have to get underneath the car and on the transmission you will see two big plugs. This check is performed with the vehicle off.
  1. 17mm or 18mm.
  2. Top plug is the fill plug and the Bottom plug is the drain.
  3. You will need a funnel with a hose attached to it.
  4. Pull the top plug out and fill until the fluid just barely comes out and that is the proper fill.
  5. Plug the hole with the fill plug. Job complete.
  • If it's a manual it will have a dip stick or it may have a cap on top of the transmission that is commonly referred to as a "sealed transmission."
  1. Put the emergency brake on.
  2. Put the car in neutral.
  3. The check for this is a 10mm plug on the transmission. Again this has to be accessed under the car.
  4. Pull that little plug and if fluid comes out then it is full.
  5. If nothing comes out then add fluid where you removed the cap until it comes out and plug the transmission.
  6. Replace transmission refill cap.
  7. Job complete.

How much 90 wt. oil does the transmission take? nothing on the dip stick.

First off, if it's an automatic transmission you DON'T put 90 wt oil in it! It uses automatic transmission fluid. Depending how low it's down it could take anywhere from 3 - 6 qts of automatic trans fluid. Have a shop look at it for you.

My tranny slips some times but it will catch after a few min

SOUND LIKE TRANSMISSION FLUID LOW OR YOU NEED A TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE.THE 4T40E OR 4T45E IF YOU DONT SEE TRANSMISSION DIP STICK.BEST TO DO A FILTER AND FLUID CHANGE.YOU NEED 7 QUARTS OF TRANSMISSION FLUID A NEW TRANSMISSION FILTER AND PAN GASKET.I WOULD BUY FILTER AND PAN GASKET AT DEALERSHIP.YOU NEED A LARGE DRAIN PAN TO CATCH TRANSMISSION FLUID.IF YOU HAVE A TRANSMISSION DIP STICK. BEFORE YOU FIRST BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL ON DIP STICK.SHOULD BE ON THE FULL MARK.IF NOT ADD FLUID TO FULL MARK.THEN CRANK VECHICLE LET IDLE UNTIL ENGINE HOT OPERATION TEMPERATURE ABOUT 10 MINUTES.THEN APPLY BRAKE PEDAL.THEN SLOWLY SHIFT TRANSMISSION SHIFTER THROUGH ALL GEARS 2 TIMES.THEN PUT TRANSMISSION IN PARK.CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL.IF NOT AT FULL MARK ADD TRANSMISSION FLUID UNTIL LEVEL CORRECT.

How to check transmission fluid and fill if nessesary.

if it is an automatic transmission, the dip stick is under the hood and should be on the drivers side of the engine, start the car leave it in park, pull the dip stick out and wipe it off with a cloth, reinstall the dip stick in the filler tube completely, and remove again and notice where the fluid level is on the dip stick,if you need to add fluid to bring it up to full, the correct fluid for your car is printed on the dip stick, you need a transmission funnel and put in in the tube you pulled the dip stick out of.
if you transmission is a standard, there is a 5/8 bolt on the side of the transmission you remove and put something like a screw driver in the hole to see where the fluid level is,.

Makes grinding noise going uphill

Have you checked your front & rear differential fluid? for the front, there is a small stubby yellow dip stick on the passenger side in the rear of the engine. It lays very low and not to be confused with the regular transmission dip stick which is located on the driver side. Also you need to check the rear diff by unscrewing the plug and putting your fingers in it to see if it's wet.

I have a leak in my 97 automatic subaru legacy and need to add some fluid to my transmission just to get it to a shop. It doesn't say in the manual or on any site I've been to where to add it or what kind...

The type best used is "Genuine Subaru Automatic Transmission Fluid Type-HP or IDEMITSU ATF HP. you add it through the dip stick hole. You may also wish to add a transmission leak oil to swell the gaskets and stop the leak add it the same way if you choose to use it. both of these should be available at your local auto parts store like NAPA. Where do you fill the automatic transmission?

If you have a tranny dipstick, then you would need a long tranny type funnel and fill there.
If you do not have a dip stick, then you would have to raise the vehicle, and look at the tranny. There will be a higher and a lower plug on it. Remove the higher plug and stick your finger in the hole. If you feel fluid, then it is full.
