4x4 shifter moves around freely with no resistance

We have a 99 grand cherokee. My son was taking his keys from the ignation. His lanyard wrapped around the 4x4 shifter. When he removed the lanyard, we discovered that the 4x4 shifter moves around freely with no resistance. We have no idea if the car is in 2wd or 4wd. You can shift out of 4wd to 2wd, but it jumps out again. we can move the shifter manually by just touching it. Any ideas?

My stepson also has a 99 grand cherokee and had the same problem they have a cable that connects the shifter to the transfer case. his problem was the cable broke. I changed it for him and works fine now but it's not easy to change so do not try to change it yourself unless you know what your doing.

I have a 2000 Jeep grand Cherokee Laredo and the four wheel drive is stuck in part time and the shifter moves freely up and down and won't lock in place

move car to dirt or ice, gravel , off pavement
PT is not for pavement unless covered in ice.
the operators guide told you that.

move to dirt and shift out.
if you have not already damaged it.. that is.

I HAVE A 98 GRAND CHEROKEE STUCK IN ALL WHEEL DRIVE AND THE SHIFTER MOVES FREELY

You may have broken a retainer clip on the linkage. Raise the vehicle and look where the shifter comes through the floor while a helper moves the shifter. Verify the linkage arm moves with the shifter. If not, then look closely at the linkage arm and bottom of the shifter shaft to see if either broke or if the clip is missing.
Good luck!

How can i use the 4 x 4 in my 2000 grand cherokee laredo (6 cyl) i dont have the owners manual and i dont know how to use my 4x4 on snow or something like that

With the Jeep in park, move the left shifter to 4 wheel drive. Proceed to put right shifter into drive, proceed to drive. Only use 4wheel drive when neccessary...ie...snow, mud, use 4 wheel lo in steep incline or when really bogged down.

Hope this helps

The shifter for the 4x4 moves freely and is stuck in 4x4 parttime.

Have someone watch the linkage underneath to make sure it is attached and that the adjustment collar isn't sliding on the rod. Otherwise, problem is in the transfer case (hope not). On the bright side, If it's cold where you are, at least it's not stuck in 2wd...no fun in the snow!!!

Stuck in four wheel

make sure your tire pressures and sizes are all the same then try backing a go froward while turning. and moving the shifter in and out of 4x4. if that does not get it then get all 4 tires off the ground with jack stands and allow the wheels to turn slowly while you move the shifter in and out of 4x4. USE CAUTION IF SPINNING ALL 4 WHEELS OF THE GROUND. if that does not get then the t-case will likely need to be disassembled and looked into.

98 Grand Cherokee shifter wont stay in place (moves freely)

Give the shifter a good hard hit on the top. Sometimes it pops out of place.
