2010 outlander-the fuel cover release cable has broken. How do I replace it?

The latch is usually part of the fuel door and the cable assembly. The end of the cable clicks into part of the fuel door itself - so the name of the part is directly related to what part exacly is broken. The best thing to do is to see if the parts people at the dealer will come out and look at it so they know what part you need. (Yes, you will have to order this from the dealer. Fuel doors and fuel door release cables are rarely available in the aftermarket.

The service manual for this vehicle does not even mention anything about the fuel release cable, let alone HOW to replace it. It cannot be real hard because the labor manual lists the labor time required to replace it at 0.9 hours. You may have to remove a trim panel or two. It is a "Skill Level B" part. (with "C" being basic maintenance like oil changes and light repairs like tire replacements and "A" being major engine/transmission teardown and repair.)

I have the same problem. Finally found this repair manual on line.
Pages 52A-27 & 28 give a break down of the seat.
The reclining knob is broken #23. It engages the reclining cable #31.
Look closely at the underside of the knob to see if part of it is broken off and this will indicate we share the same problem.
I've always let go off the knob when reclining the seat, but in the future, I'll be slowly releasing it.

Im pretty certain you need to remove the rear inside panel where the release is,to get to the cables route to the seat where it connects to release it,so I would suggest that you look carefully for retaining screws or small roundish covers over the screws to help remove the panel to get to the cable and you will need to pull on the trim cover as it has clips going into the inside panel to hold it as well(pull towards you)BUT Look first at the seat where the cable attaches to make sure a small retaimimg clip hasnt come off instead!

It should be covered under warranty, take it to the dealer, let them fix it

There is a small spring clip that snaps onto the inside of the door that has broken and/or fallen off.

The new clip is part number MU481269 and costs about $3 from your dealer.

To get the door open to replace it, have someone push on the forward edge of the door while you pull the release lever.

The release cable is sticking or broken. To release the fuel door, open the trunk and pull off the fabric liner on the left side of the trunk. Behind this liner is the fuel door release cable; this cable leads to the fuel door and attaches with a twist-lock connector. It is cylindrical with two tabs. Twist the connector clockwise about 90 degrees and it should pull out, releasing the door.

Just remember, the fuel door will not stay closed until you put the connector back in.
