Was any work just done to this car? Timing belt? It is rare that these pumps go bad but I have seen a few shell out. If you are not familiar with the ALH diesel engine I would not try to replace it. You should take it to a shop that specializes in VW's.

all diesel cars built before 1996 have seals in them which are not suitable for the new low sulfur diesel fuels sold today.Only way to remedy the problem is to have new seals fitted. Can be a costly job.Get 3 quotes.
Hope this helps.

Actually this is a relativly simple fix, it is located near the diesel filter {R/H of engine} and is merely removing the feed lines and plugs, replacing the gaskets and pump, you will have to prime the unit before attempting to drive, be generous with the diesel when priming, as running them dry can be costly. replace the filter while your at it and remember to fill the chamber with fresh fuel before sealing it closed. Good luck, hope it helps.

Make sure all lines are light when turning engine over. While turning engine over loosen the a line closes to pump or the fuel filter. You should get some fuel. Then continue on all lines working farther away.
