Vapor locking After using the Ranger for so long it quits running! I thought I was out of gas but that wasn't the case! After letting it set for 10-15 minutes it starts right up! Could it be vapor locking? If so, what do I need to do to fix the problem or problems?

When it dies check for spark at a plug wire , stick a screw driver in the end of the plug wire an hold near ground (metal on the engine ) Doesn't always have to be a fuel problem . Ignition modules can cause this also. Transistors in the module could be shorting out when hot . Rather then guessing as to what the problem is , test ! Fuel pressure test's too ! Do the cooling fans work , engine hot fuel vaporizing in the fuel rail . Check engine light on ?

SOURCE: Acts like vapor lock

when they went to fuel injection the fuel that was not used returned to the tank thus cooling the fuel and ending vapor lock, my question is did you do a fuel pressure test? and di you do a fuel leak down test? and the first thing I would do is change the fuel filter. with ethanol in the gas it kills the filter. I have to replace mine every three months they just plug up from that junk. Other than that the only other thing would be a coil breaking down when it gets hot the coil shorts out when cool it starts so check those things first. be sure fuel pressure is 50 to 60 PSI and does not drop below 30 PSI for at least a minute, if it does the fuel pump check valve is bad, also the fuel sock could be bad as well.

1985?? you sure ,havent you heard of getting cash back on old vehicles against a new one ,no wonder poor old GM is going bust .As for engine stopping on you try flushing the cooling system out with a bit of caustic soda then refilling with water only if it works then refill with antifreeze ,add the caustic to rad when engine is cold then about 4 big table spoons should do it then run engine for 20 mins or so

When I gas it up it vapor locks and spits gas out the vent holes I have it just barely in the spout and have to go real slow

Are you talking about filling the gas tank>> If yes,,, That is NOT vapor lock... thats just the angle, speed of delivery, size of hose in vehicle, etc that causes the gas to spit out,, try not putting it in so far, and use a different angle.. (mine does the same thing!)..

Vapor Lock is when the engine/carb get so hot that the fuel vaporizes in the fuel lines and carb...THEN "vapor" cannot be pumped into the engine... and it wont run... now ya know!! :)

Where do find the vapor lock on my 1999 Buick century

Vapor lock occurs when the gas in a fuel line turns from liquid to vapor, before it reaches the engine. The first signs of vapor lock are normally when your engine begins to run roughly. The engine may sputter and hesitate. It will then stall completely and refuse to restart. It may seem like the car is out of gas or the fuel pump has failed. While these are possibilities, vapor lock may be the problem.

Obtain an OBD tester from your local Autoparts store. Run the diagnostic from the OBD port underneath the dash and see if you get any codes. Most likely you will and it will point you in the right direction. My bet is an ignition relay has died.

You haven't had vapor lock in over 25 years with fuel injection

What exactly defines bad gas, that never was the cause of
vapor lock

You have to retrieve the codes, diagnose them & come up
with a solution, or stop using it,so a repairs shop is where it

Vapor lock, from my experience, is a pretty rare problem. Unless you have put too much starting fluid in through the air intake. If you have not tried to use starting fluid, you should try to spray some through the airfilter, or the air intake for the motor, while someone is trying to crank it. Do not over-saturate it, or it will cause vapor lock. (vapor lock is all fuel vapors and no air). I have a suspicion that a few squirts of this will get it to fire up. If it starts but then goes out after the starting fluid is burned up, then you may have a problem with the fuel not getting to the engine.

Hello, I have a few ideas to give you. I am thinking the fuel line may have a hole in it somewhere and that you are losing the vacuum draw at low speed. You may also have condensation in the gas tank or gasahol may have separated and you are getting a glub of something other than gas that is rolling around the inside of the gas tank. When you go to stop, the gas moves to the front of the tank, leaving the heavier contaminates at the fuel pump pickup.

That being said, there may also be a problem with the fuel pump pickup itself inside the tank. As a note, for awhile the gas stations used a foam ball filter in their pumps. But when the netting detriorated, the loose foam balls were injected into everyones' gas tanks. (rice size pellets)

Another thing you can do is add a vacuum gauge to your instrument cluster. It is both nostalgia and functional to use a vacuum gauge. Also the proper carburetor setting is made using a vacuum gauge, turning the air mixture to the maximum attainable reading, then backing off so the vacuum level is about 1lb from peak setting favoring more air(more open).

I would be interested in what you found from inspection.

You may have vapor lock. This would prevent the fuel from getting to the injectors. Try pumping the gas to get the car started. Once started, if the car will stay running, your problem should be cured. If the problem remains, it could be a more serious problem like the PCM (computer). I'm guessing it's vapor lock or otherwise air in the fuel line since the problem started after running out of gas.
