Hood release cable is frozen, how to unlatch hood?

Hood release cable is frozen, how to unlatch the hood without it?

  • deano1932 Jul 29, 2009

I dont mean to sound ungrateful but... I solved the problem
myself. The solutions here were completely of no help. I checked out a
friends Blazer and figureed out how to do it - 2 different ways...
    both work!

To unlatch the hood, you need to get to the latch from the rear.
Putting a crowbar or long screwdriver in will never unlatch the hood as
the latch is protected from the front.

Simple method: I took a stiff wire coat hanger and straightened it out.
Then i made a sharp bend (>90 degrees) about 1/2 inch from one end.
Now I slid the hanger in from the right (driver's side) in the gap
between the hood and the top of the radiator mount. Point the small
bend in the hanger towards the front. Go directly behind the safety
catch lever and behind the metal plate that hides the cable latch (you
can see that the cable goes behind the plate). Extend the bend about an
inch or so beyond the safety latch and try to catch something (a small
lever that the cable connects to) then pull to your right. Give it a
try several times until you catch the lever.

Longer Method: Remove the two nuts (13mm) behind the center column that
the plastic grill mounts to. The nuts are facing directly downward.
These nuts hold the hood latch to the top radiator mount. After
removing the nuts, you should be able to lift the hood an inch or two.
Now remove the four small bolts (I think they are 7mm or 8mm - sorry I
didnt look at the socket) that mount the top of the plastic grill to
the top radiator mount. Also, remove the two screws that mount the
plastic grill to the center column behind the middle of the grill. Now
you can use a little extra muscle to lift the hood (and latch) high
enough to get your finger behind the latch and pull the lever to the
    right.

Like I said. I did it both ways and can do the coat hanger trick in the dark now with no problems.

    Good luck!!!

If you can get a pry bar or a screwdiver under the hood and push on the mechanism that the cable pulls the hood will open.then you need to replace the cable.

My1999 chevy tahoe hood wont unlatch ! ive tried bumping the hood but nothing happens!

Sometimes it is best to go to a Salvage yard that lets you go inside their place or a Dealer selling cars. You need to see how the cable to your hood release is run.

If you are able to get inside a Salvage yard, you can get a used part to take home. You will be able to learn how to install your own by removing the Salvage part. If you break something taking off the used part, it will be a learning experience and you then can do yours without breaking something.

Look at how the grille is fitted. Look at the release mechanism. Look at the cruise control and throttle cable which may be confused with the hood release cable. Consider jacking up one side of the front frame which may help release a jammed hood release.

Sometimes a 3 foot long screwdriver is all you need, but knowing where to place it requires a trip to the Salvage yard or used car lot.

There seems to be no way to unlatch the hood release for my 92 buick regal. i have the grill off, but can see nothing at all on how to disengage. i need a diagram of assembly to figure out how this works.

Can you grab the cable with some vise grips and pull on it to open the hood? If not you need to crawl under the front remove the rock guard and look up were the cable is that runs to the hood latch. Once located use a pair of wire cutters and cut the cable as far away from the latch as possible. Once cut try pulling on the plasic covering to see if it will pull off the actual cable. Then pull on the cable and hood should unlatch.

How do i open the hood.

there should be a lever that is on the bottom edge of dash that is under the steering wheel along the trim. if the handle is broken you can use pliers to grab the cable and pull it to get the hood to realse. if you found all that and i seems to work ok then when pulling the release lever have a friend hit or shake the hood to get it to pop up a little so that you can open it all the way.

Need to know how to unlatch hood from under car as the hood cable busted

Get strong flashlight & extended reach (long) screwdriver. Looking through grill in center of hood but towards driver side, locate hood release cable. You will see the exposed wire end coming out of the casing. Follow to hood release. With screwdriver pry it towards driver side should release first latch so you can open hood.

First of all is this chat free? if not I will continue to serach online the hood latch on a 2005 chevy impala is not working and I need to know how to open the hood without the interior hood release

First, determine why it's not working. Does the pull lever feel normal or is it unusually free or difficult to pull? Free is a broken cable,,, diff to pull is a frozen latch.Try having someone put some pressure on the hood where the latch is, then try to pull the handle. If frozen, this sometimes takes pressure off it and makes it easier to unlatch.
If the cable is broken, sometimes you can snake a stiff piece of wire up from under the front of the car and then pull ******* the cable itself. sometimes this will work.If you can see the latch mechanism from either beneath the edge of the hood or from underneath, use the stiff wire to pull on the bare part of the latch cable.
