Does you engine sound like it has an exhaust leak under the hood? 89 4.0 litres were NOTORIOUS for the exh manifold cracking between #5 and # 6 cylinders. If this is the case, the O2 sensor is not seeing the proper amount of exhaust, and it will send the fuel injectors a richer condition than needed.

the answer to this mystery,and many others is in the owners manual. there is also most likely a sticker in the driver's door jamb with this specific info. why is it, do you think, that tire pressure would be different in california than in the other 49 states? it should be R-134A usually on the condenser or the line it will tell you for sure. The kit can be purchased from a parts store or a retail store Kmart Walmart etc
The most common problem for your car with that condition is plugged ports where the egr feeds into the intake. You must remove the throttle body and elbow between the throttle body and intake, you will see a passage that is most likely plugged. You can clean it all out with a screwdriver or similar but it must be taken apart to get to it.
