SOURCE: egr valve insufficient flow detected

You probably pulled a code p0401, insufficient egr flow. Your DPFE sensor is more than likely at fault. There has been a lot of trouble with these sensors. Then reset CEL or disconnect battery for 5 minutes.

Remove the throttle body housing on the top of the intake, it is a 90 degree tunnel like small piece held by 4 small bolts, turn it over and look for two holes, these holes are for the EGR valve flow, they are probably plugged up with carboned crud, clean them out with the tip of a screwdriver if neccessary to remove all the crud, once its clean reinstall it and reset your check engine light, hope this helps, let me know

SOURCE: How do I replace the

It is a relatively simple process. However, it depends on whether or not you have easy access to the EGR valve. There should be a wire plug connected to the top of valve...some models were on the side...disconnect the plug. Usually, there is a tube connected on the bottom. If that is the case, you will need to remove the tube. Use a wrench on the nut on top of tube just under the EGR valve. You may also need to remove one or two bolts that hold the valve in place. Each engine is different in the placement of the valve. Once valve is removed, installation of new valve is the reverse of removal. After installing new valve, be certain to reconnect the wire.

You may be able to remove the egr valve and spray brake cleaner, carb cleaner, or let it soak in something like seafoam for about 15 mins and the spray it with brake or carb cleaner. This works for me. Good Luck

1999 Ford Taurus SE has idling problems

These cars are notorious for throttle position sensors...I would start there first. They also tend to have problems with the EGR Valves which would also cause a surging affect such as sitting at a light or when applying the brakes!

From experience and many conversations, a clooged EGR valve is almost unheard of these day. Get to an auto part store, were they can tell you what problem code(s) your car is getting, and possible good advice.

The most common problem is a clogged EGR valve. In any case, you should take it to a mechanic who has the tools to diagnose it further, because 1/2 a dozen things can cause rough idle in a 10 year-old Windstar.
