The gear shift was still in drive but when I would press the gas pedal the engine would start to roar as if it was shifted in neutral. Thankfully I was on a county road with hills and was fortunate enough to get it to the side of the road. When I shifted the gear into park it made a real nasty noise. Turned it of and back on and Tried to shift it into reverse, 2nd gear, and third but had the same outcome. What could have caused this to happen
SOURCE: Everytime I put my car i park it goes into reverse.
It sounds like you have a damaged shifter cable. It is an adjustable cable but if it is that far out of adjustment then it is probably damaged. Replace it.
SOURCE: car will not shift into gear
Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.

Sam,
I would start with a transmission fliud and filter service.
I would then have the trasnmission checked out by a transmission shop. The transmission most of the time has the direct drum band is starting to go. The shops can rebuild it no problem, This is a very common failure wiith the trasnmission.
Good Luck

SOURCE: cannot shift from drive to park but can shift using shift lock release
check your brake light switch for proper adjustment as wel as the electrical connection at the switch also check your fuses and make sure your brake lights are working
SOURCE: 1991 Caprice No reverse. Moves in neutral. All forward gears OK.
This is Ron out of Vero Beach Florida. I have been doing trannys for years. The problem you described is caused (more than likely) by a seized clutch pack. Depending on the trans, and your car should be RWD with a 700r4 tranny, there are several sets of clutch packs and at least one band. Automatic transmissions rely on fluid pressure to "engage" the correct set of clutch discs, at the right time , to engage and change gears. I have seen in the past, where a customer parks his car for the evening and the next morning, no move. What happened?? More than likely, a clutch pack was on it\'s way out but cause the car was hot the plates were free, but after cooling, they can weld themselves together and actually "lock-up". In the morning you know the end result. Your tip on "moves in Nuetral" is the give away. Ron
