The reason being most foreign car motors are interference engines meaning that when the belt brakes and the open valves stay open they do no clear the pistons when the pistons are all the way up and will do damage to the piston and valve. American engines are noninterference meaning they do not touch if the timing belt brakes.

SOURCE: car alarm will not go

If the car has a kill switch, this is causing your car not start because its connected to the ignition or starter. Sounds like the alarm system is defective. If it's aftermarket, you might want to take it back to installers. If it's factory, take it to the dealer. The remote ties into several features that require a trained technician to handle.

SOURCE: Removing Camshaft pulley on 2.5 Dohc forester motor

To replace the timing belt back guard you will have to remove both pulleys. There is a small bolt under each pulley holding the belt guard Use a large socket to hold the pulley while you break the bolt loose with a 17mm socket. I have just done this while replacing my head gaskets due to coolant boiling from the gasket leak.

SOURCE: 2004 subaru forester, 99,000 miles. Check engine

Drop in to an Autozone, or Pep Boys, or similar big parts store & they will usually scan for codes free. This will hopefully eliminate all the guess work, or at least point everyone in right direction for better diagnosis. If not obvious from codes what the problem is, get back to us and we'll help you out.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the great suggestion . I'll have Autozone read the codes on Monday. Thanks again!"

Does the 2001 subaru forester have timing belt or chain

It has a timing belt. There's a Youtube on how to replace the timing belt for a 2002 Subaru Forester, if you're a self do'er. Your 2001 should be similar or exact to it.

In a 2003 subaru forester is it possible that changing the main wiring harness could cause an internal electrical fault in the rear wiper motor

I would say no. It is difficult to damage a motor internally unless it is run at too high or low voltage or is mechanically overloaded or jammed. Usually they just go because they decide that it is a good time.
