My '99 Passat had been operating with no problems until two days ago when we tried to turn the key in the ignition to start the vehicle. Not only did the key not turn, but it seemed that steering wheel was tightly locked....there was absolutely no "play" in the wheel at all. My husband had parked the car on the street and curbed the tires as the street was on a bit of a slope. He's wondering if this problem may be due to the fact that he curbed the tires and at the same time removed the keys from the ignition, creating a "locked" situation. Please advise.

    Thanks for your reply.

In the first sentence you advised trying to pull the wheel in both directions while trying to remove the key. To clarify my description of this problem, as I stated my husband did remove the key from the ignition when he initially parked the car and curbed the wheels. (see initial posting). So the problem is not to remove the key, but when we put the key in the ignition, the key will not turn and the steering wheel seems locked.

Any other assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, I did not receive this in time. I called AAA and they sent out a tow truck for my car.

The driver was able to unlock the steering wheel and start the car.

Sorry I got this advice a little too late.

Your steering wheel is locked in place. You need to put the key into the ignition, then turn the steering wheel more towards the way it is already turned and try turning the key then in the ignition. The steering wheel should move ever so slightly and it should free up the ignition. Let me know how this turns out.

Did the tow truck driver move the steering wheel and with the key in the ignition, start the car up?

Try hardly pulling the wheel in both directions while try to reove the key. Also the Shifter lever also plays a big role in the ignition lock. Otherwise last resort would to replace ignition swicth.

Im a girl so dont get all complicated please. 1998 corvette. Drove in rain two days ago. Now windows wont work. Runs fine until put in reverse or drive. just shut off. Will start but stops again

Unfortunately there are dozens of possible root causes for your problem. You can check fuses, especially the power windows.

Given the vehicle age, the ignition switch would be suspect. How worn out is your key?

Try this... with car not running, put key in ignition, press and hold driver window up , rotate key from OFF to ON. Did you hear the window motor? If your car sits in a garage try same by holding window down and see if by moving (rotating) key you can find a key position where windows operate.

If you find a key position where windows work, you'll need a new ignition switch. I do not recommend you drive the car if you find key position that works as it could cut out any time, place, or speed.

I have a 99 chevy 2500 van with a 350 in it. It

Start with the simple and check the fuse to the ECM. It may have blown and the crank shaft sensor wire harness which is located on the passenger side of the harmonic balance. The other thing also would be a problem with the passlock system if the van is equipped with one. Try turning the ignition key to the on position for 10 min then try starting the engine. Good luck and hope this helps.

Problem starting 99 passat

well theres no carburator, and the filter is to far away for the starting fluid to reach the intake, you would have to remove the inlet tube, its black and round .its on the leftside ontop if your standing in front of the car,it goesto a metal intake, its clamped on, use a screw driver loosen clamp and wiggle off, have someone turn key on and hold gas pedal to floor now spray then reinstall boot then try to start do this fast before fluid evaporates but tube must be on for car to start, good luck.hope this helps.

99 vw passat won't always start

That would be your Ignition switch my friend, happens to most the vw's within their 200k mile life span. if you turn the key and it doesn't start, try (as you have the key engaged to start the engine) lightly leaning the key up, down, left, right, sideways, which ever way possible, or even pushing the key its self into the ignition as far as it will go, if its the ignition switch, the car will most likely start. Now, for saftey reasons i will tell you not to drive the car once you do get it started, for the only problem i had with doing that was as i was driving down the road, the started engaged when ever i would push the clutch in, so i had to resort to "speed shifting", and something like that could lead to an accident. if you bring it to a local repair shop it shouldnt cost you more the $100 to fix.

My 99 Passat wagon turns over but will not start (cold weather)

Pull out your spark plugs and check for fuel fouling. If they are fouled replace them. If it was badly flooded you may have to shoot a little oil into the spark plug holes then turn the engine over with the spark plugs out. Reinstall plugs and it should fire off. Good luck.
