Hi Marie Thomas, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box? Which part of the test is it failing? Is the engine light on? If yes, do you have the trouble codes?

SOURCE: Jetta failing smog due to non communication with OBD - Suggestions?

the no data error can be contributed to a bad interface cable or the scaqn tool was configured wrong and therfore could not connect to the ecm. I would recommend having a scan done again by a certiefied volkswagon tech chances are the mechanics used the wrong adapter cable or reader card. your smog problem could be that your evap canister is clogged therfore gives a bad reading.unfortunately you have to have a scan done but try an independant small shop that delas exclusively with foreign cars such as porche andd mercedez. the will have the correct scan tool and will be much cheaper than a dealership. your cost should be no more than 50 dollars US ... please rate this. thanks

SOURCE: 97 CAVALIER (Z24) FAILED SMOG TEST

No, the water pump leak would not cause it to fail the smog test. The only way that could have any bearing on the test results, would be if you lost a lot of coolant, and the car was overheating, then maybe it would have something to do with failing. What were the results (specific #;s and exactly what failed?) Is the check engine light on?

SOURCE: high nox fail smog test any remedies? 99

NOX is created when the internal combustion temperature gets to high. The egr system uses burnt exhaust gases to line to cylinder walls. The purpose of this is decrease internal combustion temperature therefore reducing the amount of NOX created.Would look to a possible egr malfunction usually they will trigger the check engine light but not always. The 4.3L has been known to have issues with carbon buil up in the egr and the egr pintle not open and closing properly.

SOURCE: PCV valve failed visual inspection during smog

remove the hose to the PCV and It simply pulls out and a new one is pushed in and hose is inserted back on. It's kind of like a cork. I can not believe they check for visual inspection. Here in SC, we don't have inspections. But anyways, GOOD LUCK

Hello, the P0420 code is common on corollas with higher mileage, you will need to replace the catalytic converter. The car will automatically be failed if the check engine light is on, Clearing the codes and taking it in to smog may not work because the cat monitor and others need to complete and pass, disconnecting the battery will erase all monitor information. It's not 40 drive cycles but maybe two or so after the repair, usually driving the car on both highway and stop and go city traffic with two drive cyles will complete the monitors, depending on what state you live in it may not be necessary to pass all monitors so ask your local smog station how many and which ones must pass.

The system has to see a wide range of conditions before a smog test can be done. On most brands you have to drive at least 50 miles, at various speeds including stop and go, let it idle for 5 - 10 minutes, and run at freeway speed for at least 25 miles. It also has to reach normal operating temp of 195 degrees.

CEL P0431 but passed smog emissions in CA - how can I pass emissions if the CAT is damaged? Could it be another issue?

Maybe not your answer, but it is related: Before going to have your car smogged, check your gas cap. Check the condition of the gasket, or o-ring, inside the gas cap. If is already drying out, full of cracks, get a new one. It will not pass the visual inspection. The smog technician, salesman, will try to sell you a new one for $15 when you could get it for $8 at your local auto-parts store. The technician will tell you that if you do not get it right there and then, he will have to fail your car on the visual test and you will have to comeback to have your car re-smogged again.
The cap might still be doing an OK job of sealing the tank, but it won't pass the Visual, especially if the tech wants to sell you a cap. You can tell if the cap is doing its job if you hear a hissing sound whenever you open the gas cap after running the engine fro a while. If it is not providing a good seal, then you might get a check engine light with a code about a failure in the evaporative system.
Just a little thing to check before you go and put yourself at the mercy of the smog tech.
For $15 you could get a locking gas cap, which might be a necessity now with gasoline prices being what they are, now.

No any codes will let you fail..Rangers are bad about the valve sticking..But first look on th driverside very back on the intake..Youll see a valve with two vacuum lines The one that goes on the bottom of the valve makes a 90 bend and is bad about breaking..If the lines are good then work the valve by hand and see if it will move

It depends which emission you are failing on but I suspect that it is either CO or NOx. If it is NOx, then it is quite possible that you have a problem with your EGR valve or the ignition timing is incorrect. If you failed CO, you may have a dirty air filter or indeed, a bad carb, but I would need to know the actual gas and readings to be certain.
