are you setting the timing belt or just setting the timing with a light ? if you are setting the timing it should be set at about 10 before top dead center or maybe would run a little better at 12 or so thanks jerry holler if you have more .

SOURCE: how do i find TDC when set the timing marks on 1990 volvo 740gl

if you know the firing order of the engine and also the position of the no.1 cylinder you are off to a good start.
Remove the plug on the no.1 cylinder and turn the engine until the piston starts coming up on compression stroke, you can fing out if it is on compression stroke by placing your finger or thumb over the spark plug hole, you will feel the pressure under your thumb or finger as the piston starts to come up the bore.
when you can feel that pressure you can remove your thumb etc and stick a medium size screwdriver into the hole making sure you hold it from falling into the cylinder, rest the end of the driver on top of the piston and turn the engine slowly by hand only, (not by the starter) until the piston has come up to the top of the cylinder, now have a look at the harmonic balancer on the end of the crankshaft, there should be markings on it and one marking will have a "0" with TDC above it, line that mark up with the pointer and that will be top dead center

Testimonial: "Very educational for me, so I am learning, but I do not know what is harmonic blalancer since I could not find that in volvo's manual; also there is a steel spring near the tensioner need to compressed to insert a pin don't know how to do that does it take a special tool?"

How to time a Ford 7500 turbo backhoe

Timing a Ford 7500 turbo backhoe involves adjusting the timing of the engine's fuel injection pump. Here are the general steps to time a Ford 7500 turbo backhoe:
  1. Locate the timing marks: Look for the timing marks on the engine's flywheel and the timing cover.
  2. Clean the timing marks: Clean the timing marks to ensure they are visible and easy to read.
  3. Rotate the engine: Rotate the engine in the direction of normal rotation until the timing mark on the flywheel lines up with the pointer on the timing cover. This indicates that the engine is at Top Dead Center (TDC) on cylinder number one.
  4. Remove the fuel injection pump: Remove the fuel injection pump from the engine.
  5. Adjust the timing: Rotate the fuel injection pump until the timing marks on the pump housing line up with the timing marks on the engine. The exact timing specifications may vary depending on the engine and fuel injection pump model.
  6. Reinstall the fuel injection pump: Reinstall the fuel injection pump and secure it in place.
  7. Verify the timing: Rotate the engine again to make sure the timing marks still align correctly.
  8. Test the engine: Start the engine and test it to ensure that it runs smoothly and efficiently.
It's important to follow the specific procedures and timing specifications provided in the engine's manual or by a qualified mechanic. If you're unsure about timing your Ford 7500 turbo backhoe, it's recommended to consult with a professional mechanic or technician.

I have a 1990 mk2 golf turbo diesel injection1.6,i am in the process of replacing the head gasket

why not read the service manual and not guess.
so you are timing the cam
ours has 2.0L and 2.8L not 1.6L
so what country is this? the books are by country first, then year,
and model and year.
the timing belt (cog belt)
some engines time at TDC #1 firing,
other cars do #4 (with odd cam bias forces)
what this car does IDK but there are SOHC , And DOHC, and 8v and 16valve heads, and the 2 kinds, are not the same
you said magic word cam locks so is the DOHC dual cam head. sure
but our 16v is chain drive. so...
so I have no data on it. 1.6L

google finds this.

https://pmmonline.co.uk/technical/timing-belt-replacement-volkswagen-golf-1-6l-16v/

so is TDC #1 firing (compression) not exhaust stroke TDC.
the settings.

lacking relic manual 32 years old and ago.
all you can do is google it or buy one used on ebay
or google endlessly or like above 1 seconds work.

I do not know if this engine is interference type, and is first thing to learn before tool box open !
google finds

16 valve diesel Interference!

Mercedes 280s M130 engine 2.8L which of 2 sets of timing marks on crankshaft damper must be used?

I think the M130 engine uses a timing chain. To get you timing marks set up correctly you mignt have to take the top rocker cover off to see the Cam timing marks. The Crank should be set up to the centre 'OT' mark for Top Dead Centre, (TDC). there is a set of numbered marks either side of it. The pulley is marked for both Top Dead Centre and Bottom Dead Centre, (BDC). Being a Mercedes the marks are in German. OT for TDC and UT for BDC.

How do you set TDC?

Yes, there's timing marks on all engines. You'll find a mark on the harmonic balancer that the pullys bolt to on crankshaft. Other mark is on a tab bolted to the engine to one side of the balancer. There's a TDC mark stamped into this tab for Top Dead Center of the #1 cylinder. Place these to marks in alignment and your there.

On my 1991 mercury capri turbo 1.6 put new timing belt on still wont start my question is. does it matter which way the cams go other than lining the timing marks up

The cams make 2 complete rotations for every 1 rotation of the crank so you could be out of time by 180 degrees. With the valve cover off turn the engine over by hand. As #1 piston comes up on TDC the intake valves should be open and starting to close. As you go past TDC the exhaust valves should start to open. If this is not what is happening in this order then your timing is off. Your engine should be at TDC when the timing marks are lined up with the marker on the engine. Hope this helps.

Trying to set timing belt (new )

Be very careful with this timing belt change.
The key setting is to get the crankshaft and camshaft properly synchronized !
I believe this is an "interference" engine. If the crankshaft and camshaft are not set properly the valves will hit the pistons and be bent ! That would destroy the engine.
DO NOT TURN OVER THE ENGINE UNTIL THIS IS SET CORRECT

No you will not hear the valves hitting the pistons - you will hear the engine turning over faster than normal because you have lost compression.
The engine has marks on the gears and pulleys that will align with marks on the engine block at TDC which should be done before the timing belt is removed ! If you have did not do that and either the crankshaft or camshaft has moved, you have a problem. You can get a manual from the library, auto supply store, eBay or a manual seller.

Putting on the timing belt could use an extra set of hands- when you line up
the marks and the engine is at TDC, the injection pump has some spring tension
and will jump back one tooth. this means you have to hold the pump pulley in
place while putting on the belt. so an extra set of hands makes things much
easier.

How to replace timing belt on a 1991 plymouth lazer 2.0 turbo

If the belt has broken, the valves will be bent. This is an interference engine and there is no escaping it, the head will have to come off. It is not an easy job, belt access is poor, and there is a balance belt as well. Unless you have a lot of experience and tools, I would not recommend attempting this at home.
