SOURCE: cooling fans dont operate when engine is on

faulty temperature sensor. It's near where the thermostat lives in the motor. In an emergency you can wire the + side of the fan to the accessory panel, just know that the fan will run the entire time the car is on.

SOURCE: engine overheating

CHECK TO SEE IF THE FAN RELAY IS FUNCTIONING BY SWAPPING IT WITH ANOTHER LIKE THE WIPER RELAY IF THEY ARE THE SAME. IF THE WIPERS WORK WITH THE A/C RELAY IN IT'S PLACE, THEN TRY REPLACING THE FAN FUSE. IF NONE OF THESE METHODS MAKE THE FAN TURN ON THEN REPLACE THE COOLANT TEMP SENSOR LOCATED NEAR THE UPPER RADIATOR HOSE INLET TOWARDS THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE. HOPE THIS HELPS YOU FIND THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM. LET ME KNOW. GOOD LUCK AND THANKS FOR USING FIX-YA.

SOURCE: 1996 Honda Odyssey engine cooling fan stays on.

I don't thing there is a short there is radiator fan switch that control these fan, it works off of heat. There is also a fan relay that control look in fuse box inside the hood for fan relay and make sure its NOT stuck , if it isn't then its the fan switch. This switch may be bad and cause the fan to turn on. Replace radiator fan switch located on water outlet on engine and this should solve your problem. A

SOURCE: engine cooling fan not coming on

It may be the fan itself. Try to find the plug going to the fan, it should be close to the fan and might plug diresctly into the relay. Use two jumper wires straight from the Bat one from the pos+ side and one from the neg- side and plug them into the two holes in the connector the fan should start WATCH YOUR FINGERS. If it starts its elec prob before the fan if not its the fan.

If it's not overheating after the repairs chances are it's ok. A common overheating cause for older BMWs is the Thermostatic Fan Clutch failing. You can do a quick check by bringing it up to normal tempature and looking at the back of the fan = manualy gun the engine to a few thousand rpms, if the fan blades don't seem to follow the changes in RPM it's proubly the cause. If you have a timing light handy, it would help you see the changes in fan speed when pointed at the fan blades.

The original equipment battery on this car is weak. I had to put a trickle charger on the battery for my 2008 BMW 535i to keep it charged. Your other option is to buy an aftermarket battery that is tougher than the original and costs less (about $110 versus $435).
