P0305 means misfire on number 5 cylinder, could be bad plug, ignition coil, injector, or wiring, or low compression , carry out a compression test if ok I would try a new coil on number 5 cyl
Is the same cylinder mis firing as before you relpaced coil pack ? If so a compression test is your next option . If there is any water leaks No 4 cyl is a likely suspect and worth checking . The old plugs will give you a clue to condition of cyl's. Injector swap and wiring exam may help also ,but only if you have to . Good luck
You said E30, 320i correct? Your engine is a 2.0L 4 Cylinder engine? If so it does not have a timing belt, it has a chain, upper and lower gears and two chain slides. To change the timing chain and slide set is not easy if you have never done one, neither is the belt on the 6 cylinder engines. I recommend a reputable BMW shop.
It could very well be a bad coil pack,or you have low compression in that cylinder. If the compression is good then go with the coil pack,if not you may need a head gasket or an intake manifold gasket.
hey thanks for bringing me up to speed. ive been working on many other problems but with your great explanation i remember. we need to check the compression on that cyl. and compare it to the compression on 2 other cylinders your choice. but before you do this get a can of carb cleaner . and with the car idling spray around the intake manifold in the area of #6 cyl. what we are looking for is a small vacuum leak that would also act like this. with the engine idling and spraying around the intake the engines idle sould not change and if it does when you spray you have an intake leaking. let me know how it turns out. later paul
