SOURCE: 2001 Toyota Highlander will not

The code and having no overdrive go hand in hand. Before dropping money on knock sensors, check the wiring. If you find any broken or damaged wires, replace those first. If the problem persists, replace the sensor.

I have a 2008 higlander - rattling noise at acceleration. OK on open highway - just at acceleration? Any thoughts?

Could it be low RPM pinking?
Try premium gas to check.
If that fixes it then you have bad gas, the wrong type of gas or the knock sensor has died or is disconnected.
