The power steering pump works great when the engine runs above 2000 rpm. There has never been any evidence of cavitation or sounds coming from the pump. the resevoir is full and I have changed the hydraulic fluid in the system. Also the engine will stall at times and will run like its under a heavy load that will make the low oil pressure warnings appear. Any help or guidance
SOURCE: Low power steering fluid
if the fluid is low it will cause the noise if it is low there is a leak and could have got air in system and cause noise and possibley cause damage to pump and gear box

Most likely the oil pressure switch may be damaged. This is a simple procedure. Change and observe the results

Replace oil pump and use the bigger filter that Vw tells you to. These 1.8's have some oiling problems due to the amount of oil they hold and they want you to use synthetic oil in them.

It sounds like you have fried your main bearings and possibly your valves .... (you've totalled your engine) You should NEVER EVER RUN YOUR ENGINE WITH LOW OIL PRESSURE .... UNfortunately, this engine is also prone to clogged oil return journals As I found out accelerating up a mile long grade ... with plenty of fresh oil and the radio was up fairly loud until I noticed the knocking and the guage as low as it could go ... Oil was al stuck up under the valve covers and returned into the oil pan and the dip stick .... after the truck was shut off for a few minutes ... but with a knocking motor!
