Ignition switch or linkage problems?

Probably the rod in the steering column has failed.

possibly the fact it was an obd1 engine and the 96 is obd2

• Yea, you can test it. Put your multi-mater to Ohms and put the leads on the sensor. You should have around 700-900 Ohms and this is good.
• test the output Voltage of the sensor by putting your mater on Voltage AC and (with the leads on the same way) Now crank the engine over (it won't start because the sensor is disconnected) and look for a reading over 200mV

• That's how your test your Crankshaft Position Sensor.

take plastic cover off bottom of column that is arund switch.there is a little pin hole where the switch is in the column on the bottom edge stick something the size of the hole in an turn switch to on position push the pin in hole and remove switch,be careful not to damage electric part on switch then put new switch in in same position as the one you removed then rotate back and forth to verify its working properly

The ignition switch is usually mounted to the steering column and is operated by a linkage rod.
NOTE On column-mounted ignition switches, don't confuse the switch with the lock cylinder and keys. The ignition switch is not normally visible. On some vehicles, the steering column support has to be removed and the column lowered to find the ignition switch. On others, the switch is accessible under the dash.

• Remove the ignition switch wiring harness.
• Unbolt it from its position.
• Bolt the new switch into position.
• Attach the witing harness.

Sounds like the multifunction switch. Try working the hazard switch up and down a few times to see if you get some lights to work. If so then replace the switch.

I would check for spark when it happens. If no spark you probably have a thick film ignition module / profile ignition pickup issue. Replace both pieces if your going to do the job. It'll save you a headache later on down the road.

when you hold the accelerator does the vehicle stay running? if so the problem is in ithe IAC idle air control motor, take a small screw driver and using the handle tap the iac motor and usualy the motor will kick in and the vehicle will run fine then if the problem is rectified replace the IAC
