The transmission dipstick should be on the passenger side marked red or yellow and just by the firewall. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: I have a 2002 pontiac grand am gt that is'nt shifting gears right

My daughter has a 2003 with the same problem. She took it to a highly regarded transmission shop. They told her it is not the transmisison but an engine performance problem. She took it for an oil change to check the filters etc and the fuel filter is bad. I will follow up if that fixes the problem.

SOURCE: gear shift knob

Usually there is a small metal clip at the bottom front of the shift knob (looks like a staple.) Just pull it out and pull the knob straight up.

SOURCE: where is the dipstick located for the transmission

According to the owners manual unless you drive in hilly, or heavy stop and go traffic like a taxi, you should never have to add trans mission fluid unless you have a leak. The manual doesn't even give a fluid capacity for the auto transmission. So I guess when you have to have the auto trans. filter changed, you have to take the car to a transmission specialist. If in fact the filter even needs to be changed. The manual leaks you to believe that the transmission fluid and filter are lifetime products.

Transmission is shifting hard in my 2004 pontiac grand am

It does have a dipstick can be hard to find though check behind the motor kind tucked under the fire wall the grinding sounds unrelated to the hard shifting since it happens when your in park and the only trans parts rootating at that time is the torque converter and input shaft that fact that its not constant kinda points me more toward the belt system either a bad tensioner, water pump, power steering pump, a/c compressor or clutch, or an idler pullley

How is the transmission fluid check. Does the vehicle have to be running or not

Hi there,

Yes, for an accurate measurement, the fluid should be checked when vehicle is running and at operating temperature.

Fluid Level Check
  1. With the engine running, park the vehicle on a level surface.
  2. With the parking brake applied, position the shift lever in PARK (P).
  3. With your foot on the brake pedal, cycle the shift lever through each gear (pausing for three seconds in each gear).
  4. Then, cycle the shift lever back up to PARK (P).
  5. Let the engine run at idle for three to five minutes.
  6. While keeping the engine running perform the following steps:
NOTE: The automatic transaxle fluid dipstick handle is the black loop located toward the rear of the engine.
  • Remove the dipstick and wipe it with a clean rag or paper towel
  • Fully reinsert the dipstick
  • Wait three seconds, and remove it again
  • Check both sides of the dipstick, and read the lower level.
  • Ensure the fluid level is in the crosshatched area - if not, add small amounts of approved Pontiac transmission fluid, until level is correct.
  • Push the dipstick back in all the way

Cheers,

Where is the oil dipstick located on a 2005 pontiac sunfire

Usually on the front side (standing in front of your Sunbird) the dipstick tip on GM cars is usually yellow...some rare models have the dipstick located inside of the oil filler cap...(attached to inside of the cap:) Hope this helps.

How do I check the transmission fluid?

In an automatic transmission, the dipstick should be located around back of the engine. You let the engine run to normal operating temp. and you check the fluid level, add as needed. You add through the dipstick tube with a funnel. Hope this helps.
