I put transmission in 1998 vw jetta vr6. When I put in drive, it's in highest gear. It's not shifting unless I do it manual. Anybody got some input?

I'm confused, is this a manual or auto transmission? Does it have tiptronic or no?

Is there a Fuse for a/t shifting, 2000 vw jetta

From the tear of the car I guess you have the 4-speed automatic. That transmission is not one of the most reliable ones...it has an internal wiring harness with relays attached to it, that are in control of what gear to select, based on input from an internal speed sensor, engine speed sensor and wheel speed sensor. There is also an issue with VW claiming that the transmission "is filled for life", which is absolute B.S. You have to change the transmission fluid and the filter at least every 60K or you will face an expensive rebuild. Have your mechanic scan the computer for fault codes related to the transmission and change the fluid and filter when the problem got fixed.

Inside the transmission case above the pan. You should probably let a transmission mechanic handle this one.

Can't shift when car is cold

I have a1998 VW jetta vr6 glx with the same problem and living in New England it gets really cold, but i did some research and it worked.... With the car in neutral and the E-break engaged, reach down and pull up on the clutch pedal, thus "resetting" the tension in the cable, it will be a bit higher on your foot and the release/engage point will be higher as well but i did this when it was 10*f and i could not get any gear, after pulling up on the clutch, shifts with ease,,,, such a relief

I cannot get a manuel for a vr6

Bentley Publishing is the ONLY place that publishes a Repair Manual for the VR6 Engines. I called them about the manual, the book is about $70. and the CDRom is about $99. The one I checked on was for my 1998 VW Jetta VR6, the manual they are sending me goes from 1993 to 1999 and has 4 and 6 cylinders!
