SOURCE: Can't get A/C belt around pulleys on my 01 Chevy Tracker 2.5 V6

Removal & Installation

1.6L Engine
A/C Compressor Belt

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the A/C compressor mounting bolts.
  3. Pivot the A/C compressor towards the engine in order to relieve the tension on the belt.
  4. Remove the A/C compressor drive belt from the pulleys.

To install:
  1. Properly route and install the A/C compressor drive belt on the A/C compressor, the power steering (if equipped), and the crankshaft pulleys.
  2. Adjust the A/C compressor drive belt to obtain 6-9 mm (0.24-0.35 in) deflection.
  3. Tighten the A/C compressor mounting bolts to 13-20 f t. lbs. (18-28 Nm).
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.

Alternator Belt
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the power steering pump and the A/C compressor drive belt.
  3. Loosen the generator mounting bolts.
  4. Pivot the generator towards the engine and remove the accessory drive belt.

To install:
  1. Properly route and install the generator drive belt on the pulleys.
  2. Adjust the alternator drive belt to obtain 6-8 mm (0.24-0.32 in) deflection for a used belt or 5-6 mm (0.20-0.24 in) deflection for a new belt.
  3. Tighten the generator mounting bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  4. Install the power steering and the A/C compressor drive belt.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.

Power Steering Pump Belt
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the power steering pump mounting bolts.
  3. Pivot the power steering pump towards the engine in order to relieve the tension on the belt.
  4. Remove the power steering pump drive belt from the pulleys.

To install:
  1. Properly route and install the power steering pump drive belt on the power steering pump and the crankshaft pulleys.
  2. Adjust the power steering pump drive belt to obtain 6-9 mm (0.24-0.35 in) deflection.
  3. Tighten the power steering pump mounting bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.

Serpintine belt wont tight ,idler pully is in good shape old belt came off thought it had streached it was almost new replaced it still having same problem.

Are you sure the belt tensioner spring is strong enough to keep the belt tight ?
You should have to move the tensioner to put the belt on, then it should keep the belt tight when you finish.

1998 malibu shreding belts

Before installing a new belt spin all pulleys by hand. They should spin amoothly and freely. Check alternator, idler, tensioner, power steering and A/C. If any are hard, rough, or seized replace. Check that the belt aligns correctly with all pulleys and remove any debris embedded in the grooves.

1997 Jeep cherokee larado squeals replaced the drive belt a few times and it keeps tearing

Inspect the belt tensioner for the following conditions:
Noise
  • If the belt squeals, the tensioner force may be insufficient. Check the belt length gauge, if the length is correct, replace the tensioner.
  • If the tensioner clatters or rattles during engine operation, there may be internal interference or wear. Replace the tensioner.
  • If the belt chirps, you may have a worn pulley or tensioner or cracks in the tensioner bas or arm. Check the mounting bolts, if they are okay, replace the tensioner.
Sticking or Seized Tensioner or Idler
  • If the tensioner does not operate smoothly or doesn't move, you may have: internal thrust surface damage/wear, internal damage/wear, or a broken spring, replace the tensioner.
Appearance
  • Inspect the tensioner arm for cracks or other damage. If the tensioner is broken, it should be replaced.
  • Look for excessive tensioner movement at idle, which can indicate internal wear, an out-of-round pulley or loose mounting bolts. Check the mounting bolts, it they are in good condition, replace the tensioner.
  • Make sure the tensioner is not tilted or misaligned. Also make sure a gap exists between the tensioner arm and base. If you notice a problem, check the mounting surface, it the surface is okay, replace the tensioner.
Belt Tracking
  • If the belt does not track properly on the pulley tracking surface, you'll need to troubleshoot the problem. Check the mounting bolts and the system alignment. Then, make sure the correct belt is being used for the vehicle. If all of these things are intact, replace the tensioner.
Belt Length Indicator
  • A belt length indicator is built into each tensioner.
  • The gauge identifies the effective operating range of the tensioner.
  • It consists of a pointer and either two or three length marks.
    • On a three-mark gauge minimum belt length, maximum belt length and ideal belt length are indicated.
    • On a two-mark gauge only minimum belt length and maximum belt length are indicated.
    • Ideal belt length on a two-mark gauge is generally half way between the minimum and the maximum.
  • When a belt wears and stretches with age the tensioner will move towards the maximum belt length to maintain proper tension.
  • As the pointer nears the maximum length mark, replace the belt.

Why belt keeps shredding

usually due to a bad bearing, or from resistance due to a frozen or failing assemble, as in power steering, alternator, or an idler. The best way to determine is to remove the belt and check all pulleys for play and resistance.

I need to know where the belt tensioner is located to change my serpintine belt.

Just to make sure you have the right part (belt Tensioner), If you push and pull on the serpentine belt, look for the pulley that moves with the belt. That will be the Belt tensioner pulley, there is going to be a slot on the tension arm for a ratchet so you can take the tension off the old belt and slid it off the idler pulley or any one of the other pully's. Good luck and hope this made sense, keep me posted be glad to help.

Tigthen belt on 03 chevy venture

the belt tensioner is responsible for keeping proper tension on the belt... a likely cause for the squeel is a belt slightly too long or a defective belt.

How do you relace an alternator belt on 1998 chevy tracker?

A year is not a good sign. The belt should not have come off in that span of time. I would make sure you do not have a worn out idler or tensioner pulley bearing before installing your new belt or reinstalling the original if it is not worn or damaged.

You will find one or two small pulleys involved with drive belt. One of the smaller pulleys will be an "idler" pulley and simply redirects the belt to a different accessory. The other small pulley is considered a "tensioner" pulley, it is spring loaded and keeps the correct tension on the accessory belt.
The tensioner pulley will have a "squared" hole in the bracket or a bolt through the center of the pulley. In either case you will use a wrench to pry the tensioner pulley arm in the direction that loosens the belt. Once tension is relieved, pull the belt off a pulley and remove the belt. You will reverse the process to install the new belt.
Good luck and let me know.
