Yes it is as easy as it looks. If you had the tire off and figured out that it looks easy, you shouldn't have much problem.

SOURCE: Rear wheel bearing diagram

The bearing is pressed in so you will have to carry the hub to a machine shop to have the old bearing pressed out and the new bearing pressed in once you have the hub off the car.

Process to remove hub is as follows (from the 1990 Miata Service manual)

Remove rear wheel, rear wheel brake caliper assembly (suspend with a rope), and disc plate.

Check for rear hub play with a dial indicator, if excessive play either tighten the locknut or remove hub and replace bearing.

To remove bearing bend up the locknut stake and remove axle nut - torque is between 159 - 217 ft pounds.

Now remove the hub, retaining ring, rear wheel knuckle, wheel bearing (if loose), dust cover.

Replace with new parts, locknut, dust cover, knuckle bushings and hub bolts (if worn).

Take knuckle with wheel bearing to machine shop and have old bearing pressed out and new bearing pressed in.

Assembly is reverse of the above.

I have personally found that by the time I pay a machine shop to do the removal and reinstall of the bearing and take my time into account it is less expensive to pay a good shop to do this work for me.

SOURCE: Rear Wheel bearing needs to be replaced

the bearing has to be pressed in, quite the job even doing it at the shop- you will have to have some sort of press to press the bearing in.

possibly, but the most common problem is the engagement motor located on the rear of the transfer case. Motor looks like small wiper motor and can be replace fairly easily.

How do you change rear wheel bearings on a 2001 intrigue

Front wheel drive! Pull rear tire and the brakes shoes or disk need to be removed. There will be a plate bolted in the the rear hub which does hold the bearing and seal in place. Remove the plate. Now the bearing is pressed in the hub race. May need a bearing puller. Once out, replace with new seal. Take your time installing the bearing, Its very tight and could damage it by tapping too hard to get it in. Just reverse
procedure to complete. It's a hard job - You may want to call around and get estimates for the repair. May be well worth it - Good luck

2001 Olds Bravada noise from rear axle when driving

2002 bravada

that noise could be a lot of things. a bad wheel bearing, a bad u-joint makes many different noises. bad bearings in the rear-end itself. the backing plates directly behind the wheels could be rotting out and crumbling. that is all wheel drive and takes a special fluid in the transfer case. if the correct fluid isn't used it will chatter bad. the special fluid is available from g.m. only and is called "autotrac-fluid".
you may need to have to have it professionally diagnosed to save from replacing a lot of parts that aren't going to fix it. Good Luck..........Scott
