SOURCE: 01 Montero not starting but electrical works when key in ignition

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the new key I had made was not quite a perfect match for the idnition cylinder. It worked fine but after a few months the car would intermittently just crank over. I would never know when this would happen. Most of the time it fired up without any problem. The problem was that over time the new key because,it wasn't quite perfect, wore down something inside the ignition cylinder (the place where you put your key to start). Somehow this made the security system nervous and it shut off the power to the plugs. It was a real head scratcher. I hope this solves your problem.

SOURCE: check engine light

this light is warning you of a serious issue concerning a failed sensor in the engine. you will need to run this vehicle in the nearest dealership for a diagnostic scan on the ecm/pcm device. this scan will give detailed info on the location of the problem and how to fix it. this scan cpu will also reset the light and it will shut off once the issue is fixed.

If you just want to shut the light off, you can just pull the battery post for a minute. this will reset the ecm but, if the issue is not fixed, the light will come back on in the coming days.

Lost key need to replace Ignition switch for 1998 Mitsubishi Montero sport

Disconnect the battery: Before beginning any work on the electrical system of your vehicle, disconnect the battery to prevent accidental shocks or short circuits.
Remove the steering column cover: The ignition switch is located on the steering column, so you'll need to remove the cover to access it. Depending on the exact model and trim level of your Montero Sport, the cover may be held in place with screws or clips.
Remove the ignition switch: Once you have access to the ignition switch, you'll need to remove it from the steering column. This may involve removing any retaining screws or clips that are holding it in place, as well as disconnecting any electrical connectors.
Install the new ignition switch: Install the new ignition switch in the reverse order of the previous steps, making sure that it is securely fastened to the steering column and that all electrical connections are properly connected.
Test the new ignition switch: Once the new ignition switch is installed, reconnect the battery and test the switch to make sure that it is working properly. Insert the new key and try to start the engine. If the engine starts and the key can be turned smoothly, you've successfully replaced the ignition switch.
It's worth noting that depending on the specific make and model of your Montero Sport, the exact steps for replacing the ignition switch may vary slightly

2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. Two different Locksmiths failed to program transponder key for it.

Question edited for clarity.

Try an auto electrician. They have better scan tool computers and there may be an underlying issue with ECM, BCM or the Security Module.

1999 montero sport key turns but no sound from it

Sounds like you have a bad ignition switch. It's the little box under your steering column with all the wires running to it.

Key stuck in the ignition

Well the radio code is an anti-theft issue. you have to take it to the dealership and they get your VIN number and they will retrieve the serial number to your radio. With that they can look up your code. It will cost at least $75 dollars.

Make sure they connect it back up correctly because then if you live in climates that reach under 20 degrees your radio will shut off. or when hit a bump in the winter your radio will shut off and you have to enter the code everytime it goes off.

I have an '01 montero sport XLS. Battery died and I had to experience this the hard way.
