SOURCE: Where is the 1998 Pontiac Sunfire SE fuel filter?
Dear Oilzum, The fuel filter on most cars of that era are back by the fuel tank(where supply line comes out of tank), and usually on the inside of the frame. Find the fuel line from the tank towards the engine and you will find the fuel filter. Most are around 6 inches long and 3 inches around. Call me back if you need more help. quicbric(volvo man)

Check your engine coolant.
SOURCE: sunfire will not start, it started for a second or
Have somebody listen at the gas cap for a buzzing sound when the ignition switch is turned on, or if you can hear it, it only does it for a few seconds, if you don't hear it, the pump is bad and the gas tank has to be dropped to change it.
This is not recomended, but I do it all the time to make sure the problem is in the fuel system. Spray a little bit of starting fluid in the intake, if it starts, the problem is in the fuel system, but listen for the buzz sound first.
Other problem could be a clogged fuel filter, or a faulty fuel pressure regulator. Have a fuel pressure test done, that would also reveal the problem, if it's a fuel problem.

This has NOTHING to do with the fuel pump, and EVERYTHING to do with the security system. The problem is either in your key, ignition/lock cylinder, or TDM (theft deterrent module) AKA the "computer" or "brain". When the security doesnt read the key properly it goes into anti theft mode, The vehicle thinks its being stolen so it shuts off parts of the car. In your case the fuel or injectors. This is just a communication problem, the hard part is determining which part is failing. If it were my car, id just bypass the whole system. Check out this link. Tons of info, symptoms, and "DO IT YOURSELF" solutions. The answer to your problem IS on this site. Good luck

SOURCE: where is the fuel pump
GM doesn't use a fuel pump shut off switch, the safety system works like this, fuel pump is turned off if the engine oil pressure goes to zero with the key in the run position. Ford uses a shut off switch that is activated by an impact exceeding 3 G's (3X the force of gravity), it is called the fuel pump shut off inertia switch.
