LIfter Noise. Just had the head rebuilt and new head gasket installed. Now one lifter is ticking away. This is the 1.5 doc. Can this be lash adjusted? or what are my options? New oil installed at rebuild and it's at proper level.

The automatic valve adjustor not allow you to set the valve gap.If it is making bad noise then it needs replacement. When changing valve lifters, it is recommended that the lifters are allowed to "settle/seat" for a minimum of 30 minutes to allow excess oil to drain. If this recommendation is not followed, some valves will make contact with the piston, resulting in the valve to break at the collet groove. It is also ideal if the engine is allowed to rest over night before starting the engine for the first time. If possible, the engine should be hand cranked or turned by hand the first time.

Excessive lifter noise

Did you follow instructions for adjusting the valve lash? Normally, you take out all gap at the circular part of the cam and then go another half or three quaters turn.

1990 Pontiac Lemans 1.6l noisy lifter problem

Really, really, sorry to suggest that the head gasket may not have oil passages lined up. Always lay the oil gasket over the new gasket to see if each and every hole is punched out and lines up to the old gasket.

Also, each lifter needs to go back to its original spot. The Cam lobes are worn for that lifter and a mismatch can be possible. A mismatch could mean extra play in a badly worn lifter face mated to a badly worn Cam lobe.

If that is what you did then get new or rebuilt lifters. Check out Compcams.com for a detailed description of each engine scheme. Your engine may have a thrust plate for the lifters and it may be incorrectly installed creating noise.

Will intake gasket leak make the lifters tic when first starting

I dont think and intake gasket will cause lifter noise. It may cause a rough idle and or a miss at idle on cold start up . as the engine warms up the miss or rough idle will decrease . As for the lifter noise this could be cause by the lifter bleeding down or poor oil presure . On your model of engine there is no adjustment on the rocker arms for lifter noise . They are a 0 lash type .

I have a loud ticking under my valve cover. 97 ford escort. I think its a loose valve but is it some thing i can fix. I know a little about cars. but not an expert

not a valve, but a lifter. I will paste procedure below. You judge if you can do it or not. Recommend you replace them all while you're in there. If you let this go, the lifter will wear out the camshaft. Lifters are $22 each, and you have 8 of them. You will also need a new valve cover gasket.

  1. Disconnect the engine air cleaner-to-valve cover hose from the cover by compressing the hose clamp with pliers and sliding the clamp back, then separate the hose from the cover.
  2. Remove the spark plug wire separators from the valve cover and set the wire assemblies aside.
  3. Unfasten the three valve cover retaining bolts.
  4. Remove the valve cover and gasket from the cylinder head.
WARNING Do not use any abrasive grinding discs to remove gasket material. Use a plastic manual gasket scraper to remove the gasket residue. Be careful not to scratch or gouge the aluminum sealing surfaces when cleaning them.
  1. Remove the old gasket material from the cylinder head and valve cover mating surfaces.

If removing more than one valve lifter (tappet), mark the lifters and their locations as they must be installed in their original bores.

  1. Remove the rocker arm(s).
  2. Unfasten the lifter guide plate retainer.
  3. Remove the guide plate and the lifter.

To install:
  1. The oil feed hole in the lifter must face away from the oil feed hole in the cylinder head.
  2. Lubricate the lifter(s) with clean 5W-30 engine oil and install them in their original bores.

Make sure the lifter guide plate retainer tabs are towards the rear of the cylinder head, and the lifter guide plate tabs are towards the front of the cylinder head.
  1. Install the lifter guide plate and tighten the retainer.
  2. Install the rocker arms.
Do not use any sealer with a silicone type gasket.
  1. Install a new gasket and the valve cover.
  2. Install and tighten the valve cover retainers to 71-97 inch lbs. (8-11.5 Nm).
  3. Attach the spark plug wire separators to the cylinder head.
  4. Connect the engine air cleaner-to-valve cover hose and engage the hose clamp

Loud ticking noise when engine is cold sometimes goes away sooner then other times.

The best cure without removeing the engine or head is to change your oil and use a 0w30 synthetic oil in the engine,if this gets rid of the noise then your good to go,if not you need to replace the lifters or have a blockage in an oil gallery.Try new oil first, the later will not be cheap to repair.

Tapping noise

A tapping sound could be lifter tick, or rod knock... if it goes away, what you have is lifter tick, check your oil, low oil makes it worse.

Oil pumps up the hydraulic lash adjusters in your valve covers, at lower RPMs, the oil pressure is lower and will not fully pressurize them. Try holding your rpm at about 3500 or so with the car in neutral (parked) and see if it goes away, it should.

In later years (I think starting in 97 or so) mitsu started using a larger bore so called "third gen" lash adjuster. They don't tick as much, but they still do at times.

The good news, lash adjusters are not THAT hard to replace, figure a set of 24 will run you less than 150 in parts.

The better news, it doesn't hurt anything, as long as you can live with the sound, there isn't any reason to change them.

Good luck,
Scott
