2004 Grand Cherokee (4.0)intermittent #1 cyl misfire and #1 injector control circuit fault (3 wks). Problem began after changing spark plugs. Replaced: coil pack, 6 injectors, & Bank #1-#2 O2 sensors.

There were no mechanical problems with engine prior to changing 100k mile spark plugs. Old plugs were slightly oxidized, but looked good. Have Jeep in shop currently, but mechanic has been unable to diagnose problem.

My intermittent #1 cylinder misfire problem has been determined and solved. For anyone who has a Chrysler 4.0 6cyl engine, be aware that it damaging to your engine to use 87 octane gasoline for an extended period of time, even though the owners manual recommends this. After having discussions with several Jeep dealership and Jeep expert technicians, it was determined that my 2004 Jeep suffered heavy carbon buildup around the exhaust valve stems. This is believed to be from 13 years of using low octane gas, driving in overdrive, and not removing the carbon in the head with fuel injector cleaner and then blowing out the engine at 3200 RPMs or higher at least one week per month. The sludge builds up and prohibits the valves from turning, causing the misfire. Service Bulletin #09-003-03 defines the symptoms and recommended repairs. If experiencing intermittent misfires, I strongly suggest using 93 octane, add Lucas fuel injector upper cylinder cleaner/lubricant, and run the engine without using overdrive for at least one week. Rev engine to 4500 RPMs for 15 seconds while sitting in park. Repeat 5 times. This should help loosen and clear carbon sludge from engine.

Injector control circuit fault- you need to check the circuit thoroughly. Check the wire from the injector to the pcm. Key off, take battery off, then pull plug on the pcm, put an ohmmeter on the wire from #1 injector to the pcm electrical plug. This will tell you if the wire is all good. If it is good, and no problems with the injector connector or the pin inside the pcm plug (the pin with the wire from injector #1), then there might be a problem with the injector control inside the pcm. The internal control acts as a grounding source for the injector. When the injector is grounded is when the injector pulses. Those internal "drivers" have been known to fail, seldom but it can happen.

Testimonial: "Montehammons. Thank you for your response. Will definitely do as you suggested."

I worked on one with the same issue. Ended up being the harness burned at the rear of the engine on the exhaust. Burned wires going to coil pack and shorted when I moved the wires to the coil packs.

Testimonial: "RoadkillJoe Plank. I thought that it was a broken wire in the coil pack harness, but haven't been able to identify a short or open wire by moving harness. Will inspect further for burnt or scarred wire insulation. Thank you for your response."

Have a 2004 jeep grand cherokee larado miss firing.changed spark plugs and coil pack. Still have misfire. Any suggestions?

misfires are more from faulty injectors than plugs
check/ clean the injectors and run a can of quality cleaner through the system
run the fault codes

2004 Sorento began with code P0305, cyl #5 misfire. Inspected and replaced plugs, wires, and coil pack on cyl #2. Repair shop told me cyl #5 injector bad so they replaced. Still has misfire.I suggeste

If you had code P0305, I don't know why they would have done anything to the #2 cylinder but if they have already replaced the plugs, wires and injector; here are a few more items to check:
1) Check connections from ECM. Look for any corrosions or bent/broken pins.
2) Check the fuel line pressure
3) Check the engine compression
4) And if the above are good, then you will probably have a defective ECM

P0301 - Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected.

Possible Causes:
- Improper spark plug at cylinder #1
- Insufficient compression at cylinder #1
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- The injector circuit is open or shorted at cylinder #1
- Fuel injector #1 may be faulty
- Intake air leak at cylinder

Possible Solutions:
- Perform Injector Service
- Replaced Spark Plug #1
- Replaced Injector #1
- Replaced Ignition Coil #1

Being you have a heavy gas smell I would look into the injectors. If injector #1 is over producing it can cause a misfire. Test your compression and fuel pressure.

1999 jeep cherokee 6 cylinder engine light

1.Plugs
2. Vacuum leak
3. Injector fault
4. High or low fuel pressure.
Thats the list of things to check.
This is a #3 cylinder misfire.
There is also TSB about #3 injector needing added heat protection. This could definitely be the cause. I start at plugs and go from there.
Hope this helps.
Thank you,
Lee
