2003 Jeep liberty, part-time light on when in 2wd. Pull lever up into 4wd light goes out
SENSOR IN THE TRANSFER CASE SENDS SIGNAL FOR LIGHT, LINKAGE IS PROBLY HITTING IT, SOMETIMES THE WIRING GETS LOOSE AND HANGS DOWN THEN THE LINKAGE STARTS HITTING IT AND RUBBS THROUGH THE WIRING, GET SOME BUT CONNECTOERS THE SEALING KIND AND REPAIR
Testimonial: "how do you repair? linkage on outside of transfer case"
buttt-splices
all needs said is,
correct all damage seen.
or rusty pins. electics 101
how to repair damage? you say to the blind
sorry no photos of damage
NO JOY.
if harness is bad, buy new one from jeep?
or repair yours, in place.
google how to fix wires on cars the right way
we use solder and sealant based heat shrink tubing so it LASTS.
we never use (twist+tape+pray)wire nuts
or crimp-butttsplices,down there where it's wet'
EVER
btw the lamp is not a direct system
the xfr case switch does NOT wire
directly to the cluster lamp
not in the lease.
×
3 count them, 4wd.
systems.
we cant guess what you are driving, ever.
must be said
4wd tells the helper zero. only that has 1 of 3 transfer cases
what are all the words on the shifter. lever.
all makings all modes
or look a the rear of you transfer case.
and read the NV###
231 PT
232 PT
242--awd and PT 4Lo.
see. if the lamp only sticks on,
maybe you damaged it driving in PT, and did that
and asking for help and not showing your shifter
in photos, is hopeless
pretend there are 4 liberties.
one is no 4wd
and 3 more.
if you car was here in our shop
wed see that in 1nano second and diagnose
what is really there, not phatoms.
Testimonial: "Not stuck in 4WD. Only light malfunction"
ONLY YOU CAN KNOW THAT?, I CAN FEEL IT IN 1 SECOND, IN STEERING,me at wheel.
IS IT SUPER COLD THERE? things stick cold.
as folks in Alaska that...horrid there.
scan the pcm yet.?
the liberty has THREE 4wd options new, and none.
3 transfer cases(facts)
2 are part time ,offroad or ice only
one the NV242 is full time, and 4Lo
4lo offroad. only 4lo is part time only.
4lo is really rock crawler mode...
my question is, after all I'm not driving
is who put it in 4wd, and when and on what road. (driving on top of what?)
and what box is there, see your tag
id have looked the , before buying car.
the cluster is just data terminal, networked
if the lamp glows (some not all)
4lowPT lamp is pure data, on the PCI NETWORK
SO IS PART-TIME LAMP(LED)
it means bcm (or tcm) told it to turn on.
not scanning the pcm is a fail,.what if you have communication errors. and now you chase phantoms all day?
if just the 4low switch stuck ,(only)
4LO IS PARTTIME, SO ITS THE SAME. RULES.
then it's bad, the wire is,or damage to the 4low, parts, near said switch)
using 4low illegallly can do that damage.
see my points/?
YOU CAN TEST THE SWITCH,
0 OHMS CLOSED
INFINITY OPEN
IF STUCK ,then its bad, or inside box damage.
tell me, jack one tire or one end of car
lights work now?
shift all modes. work now. key on not running.
sure inspect harneess,on any transfer case
that has switches acting up. (like captain obvious, no?)
its just simple electrics here.
there is switch in the shifter too. on 1 of the 3systems;
question 1.. the cluster has fulltime led
does it every glow, ever?
no, then your car is NOT AWD,its part time all the time ,not in 2wd.
facts.
sure wish owner read a simple tag
as my German ASE ,BUDDY SAYS,
if you don't know what you have(FIRST)HOW CAN YOU FIX IT.?
RHETORICAL.
THERE 3 LIBERTY'S NOT 1.
fact is, all 3 lamps glow by pure BCM/TCM
logic,
the cluster is networked here (PCI)
4low led
part time led
Full time. led
so we know little,facts here.
the cluster has a DIY self test
run that and see if all 3 Leds work?
if yes, the switch is stuck logically
(means it or its wires bad)
only if ,scans show no comm errors;
I'd run all the tests,. if all seem ok
scans / cluster self tests, wires there ok
id go off road, and use all modes (unstated by you) on the 4wd lever. do them all say
at 1mph.
slow. 4low is tricky, go SLOW.
now back to 2wd, all good now.(lamps out)
this how to tests 4wd. on all jeeps
do that.
assumes no other errors on jeep
no funny acting ANYTHING else
charge lamp not stuck on
head lamps bright
engine runs great.
battery charged.
like that.
see why, what if using the car correctly
off road, cleared the switch issues.
answer 2
what if you are like concrete land locked like NYC,LA.,et cetra
4 jack stands, drive car in AIR.
here is the cluster self test.
after all , it can fail and lie to you
so is first
the test will flash most lamps 4wd for sure
all 3 lamps for 4wd
all in the service manual if you care to read.
quote
The instrument cluster actuator test will put the
instrument cluster into its self-diagnostic mode. In
this mode the instrument cluster can perform a selfdiagnostic
test that will confirm that the instrument
cluster circuitry, the gauges, the PCI data bus message
controlled indicators, and the chime tone transducer
are capable of operating as designed. During
the actuator test the instrument cluster circuitry will
sound the audible tone transducer, position each ofthe gauge needles at various calibration points, illuminate
each of the segments in the Vacuum-Fluorescent
Display (VFD) unit, and turn all of the PCI data
bus message-controlled indicators on and off again.
Successful completion of the actuator test will confirm
that the instrument cluster is operational. However,
there may still be a problem with the PCI data
bus, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), the Airbag
Control Module (ACM), the Body Control Module
(BCM), the Electronic Vehicle Information Center
(EVIC), the Sentry Key REmote Entry Module
(SKREEM), or the inputs to one of these electronic
control modules. Use a diagnostic scan tool to diagnose
these components. Refer to the appropriate
diagnostic information.
(1) Begin the test with the ignition switch in the
Off position.
(2) Depress the odometer/trip odometer switch button.
(3) While still holding the odometer/trip odometer
switch button depressed, turn the ignition switch to
the On position, but do not start the engine.
(4) Release the odometer/trip odometer switch button.
(5) The instrument cluster will automatically
begin the actuator test sequence, as follows:
(a) The cluster will turn on, then off again each
of the PCI data bus message controlled indicators
to confirm the functionality of the indicator and
the cluster control circuitry:
(b) The cluster will sweep the needles for each of
the gauges to several calibration points in sequence
to confirm the functionality of the gauge and the
cluster control circuitry:
(c) The cluster will sequentially step the odometer/
trip odometer VFD unit display from all ones
(111111) through all nines (999999) to confirm the
functionality of all VFD unit segments and their
control circuitry, then display the software version
number.
(d) The cluster will generate five (5) chime tones
to confirm the functionality of the audible tone
transducer and the control circuitry.
(6) The actuator test is now completed. The instrument
cluster will automatically exit the self-diagnostic
mode and return to normal operation at the
completion of the test, if the ignition switch is turned
to the Off position during the test, or if an engine
rpm message indicating that the engine is running is
received from the PCM over the PCI data bus during
the test.
(7) Go back to Step 1 to repeat the test, if
required.

Usually answered in minutes!
I EDITED MY ANSWER THE LINKAGE IS PROBLY HITTING THE WIRES THEY MAYBE DAMAGED IF SO REPAIR THEM IF NOT TIE THEM OUT OF THE WAY. YOU COULD HAVE SOMEONE IN THE CAB WATCHING THE LIGHT WITH THE KEY ON AND YOU WIGGLE THE WIRES DOWN THERE TO ISOLATE THE FAULT.
OP !!! please EDIT YOUR POST,PLEASE
AND SAY (TAG READ)
NV### TRANSFER CASE STUCK IN PART TIME.
WHY.?
10X BETTER ANSWERS, FOR SURE.!
it's only 5 minutes work
to read the transfer case tag
then we can diagnose what is there? yah?
1:read the tag and post 1 of the 3 boxes there.
2a:check fuses.
2b. run the cluster self test, lamps work?
3: scan the PCM for errors, any ,and post them.(comm errors or 4wd errors)
4:if driving on dry pavement in part time or 4low ,please don't, you will cause damage.
D.dry means ICE free."Operator Errors"
5: look for damage near the transfer case harnesses. sure....
6: test the switches there with voltmeter
live or ohms , unplugged. for proper ops.'
7: if the switch test pass, as the SM tests
show, (they do so in the SM ,at the BCM pins.
if they read ok, then the BCM/PCM/or cluster
has problems, the three 4wd lamps are data
now, and ma.y not be communicating correctly end to end. if yes, dealer time.
or very good ASE shop is recommended.
there is the whole story
but expands if a problem is seen
we dont guess. we test.
good luck..
ps.did you driver car to dirt
and see if you can test all 4wd modes
and get it back to 2H
be WISE.
or pretend doing all that on 4 jack stands
way 2.
