The transmission shifter is locked on my 2010 volkswagon jetta

Check your fluid level, check for puddles under the car. My first guess, though, is the linkage to the shifter. Probably broke.

Does the shifter feel loose? Does it drive in neutral or does it lock in two gears if you select a different gear? I'm trying to determine if it is a transmission problem or a shifter problem. It is likely a shifter problem.

YOU HAVE TO GO TO VOLKSWAGON DEALERSHIP OR A TRANSMISSION SHOP THAT WORKS ON IMPORT TRANSMISSION.THEY WILL GET YOU A NEW TRANSMISSION ON ORDER.

change the brake light switch

Your transmission and cv axle is running dry. Grease it up, fill it up and try it again. And tighten whatever is loose that is allowing it to leak.

Transmission problem...

I'd check the fluid levels... on most if not all 98's there is no tranny fluid stick so you have to either look for the plug on the transmission. Most cars have 2. One on the bottom and one half way up from the bottom of the transmission driver's side. Top it off until the tranny fluid runs out of the hole.

If this doesnt help... you need to get it checked.
