Generally speaking, resetting the computer will not solve the problem since codes are stored after two or three failed drive cycles- and will remain in memory for as long as 45 drive cycles even when it's properly repaired by a DIYer. Take the car to a reputable transmission repair shop or to the dealership for troubleshooting and repair, before you do more damage to the engine/drive train that can become even more costlier. Unless you have the proper diagnostic tools, repair tools, and knowledge/service manual on how to repair a transmission- leave it to the professionals. That is my kind advice. Best wishes.
BTW, troubleshooting BMW transmissions can not be done with a conventional OBD-II scanner tool.

SOURCE: BMW X5 Trans Fail Safe Program,
sometimes it will clear if you turn the X5 off and restart it. however, it could be an early indication that the tranny is about to expire. i have had it happen and it cleared with a power cycle, but also had friends where it cleared for a few weeks/months and returned. this time it was really the transmission that went bad. if you can't get it to clear, then i'd suggest taking it to the dealer and have them plug into it to have a better look.

the only solution to the many problems with volkswagens is to just blow them up.....or make a yard ornament out of them as i had to do with mine at 89,000 mi. when the tranny finally went!! they were great vehicles back in the day...not anymore! from the auto tranny problems/failures to the crayon smell with so so many probs in between, you will get the life sucked out of you and your money sucked out of your wallet and the problems will keep occuring over and over. AND volkswagen will be of absolutely NO HELP! Get rid of it while/if you can!!!!!
SOURCE: BMW X5 Trans Fail Safe Program,
IT'S VERY EASY TO RESET THE TRANSMISION'S COMPUTER. HOLD GAS PEDAL DOWN. TURN THE KEY TO THE NUMBER TWO. CONTINUE TO HOLD THE GAS PEDAL DOWN FOR THIRTY SECONDS.RELEASE THE GAS PEDAL AND PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL FOR TEN SECONDS. NOW YOU CAN TURN THE VEHICLE ON. THAT SHOULD TAKE IT OUT OF SAFE MODE

That is a pretty robust transmission but its computer is very sensitive the quality of the electrical supply. If you take it to a shop, they will probably put a known good battery in the car and check and clean the electrical grounds before they even look at the transmission. If this is your original battery, you will probably save yourself some money (and perhaps a trip to the transmission shop) if you replace the battery yourself and clean any ground connections you can find. Sorry, but other than the one near the battery, I am not familiar with the ground locations on this model, though there should be a ground strap around one of the engine mounts that should be inspected/cleaned.

Does it not recognise scanner or does scanner say " no communication" ? If no communication it maybe a fuse blown causing no power to diagnostic socket or the scanner is not comparable with your vehicle I would need more info to be of more help Regards Jim
