My 1989 ford f150 will not downshift unless I do it manually.

Could be a vacuum leak. Had a similar problem with an 88 ranger. Or the shift linkage is out of adjustment.

absolutely. ford didnt change the engine and the body until 1993. as long as it is the same saize you are fine! Just make sure you know what goes where when you unistall and instal the new motor. Congrads on having a pony! :D

1995 VW Jetta Automatic transmission shifts fine upon initial take-off from stand-still. Once tranny has shifted up into 4th, and then back down into 3rd, (as it should normally) it will not shift back...

I would suspect you are correct and it is an electrical problem with the electronics in the transmission. I would recommend you have this looked into by a professional. Ignoring it my end up causing more expensive problems.
