1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo starter

My 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo is having problems starting. There is power when I turn the ignition key, but all I hear is a click when I try and turn it over. I bridged the connection between the two studs on the starter which sparked and then I was able to start the vehicle.

Is this just the solenoid or do I have to replace the whole starter unit.

This means it is the solenoid. But usually on those the starter and solenoid are one unit. They can be purchased individually, but it is usually almost as expensive as replacing the whole unit.

I had this problem on my Jeep. The problem is in the ground. Clean or replace your battery terminals, that did it for me. Also check the ground to chassis connection, make sure its clean and tight.

It is possible that the ignition switch has come loose and broke the rod inside. It will not be the starter as you were able to jump it and get the vehicle started. What is the mileage on your Jeep?

A few days ago, I went to start it. It started fine (has a new battery) but then without me turning the key, it starts again and I hear a pop. I turn off ignition. It would not start again after that

> only one relay in engine compartment is marked.

Check the inside of any cover you removed, there is often a legend (key) molded into the cover.

Keyless remote 1996 jeep grand cherokee laredo programing

Instructions
  1. Programming the First Transmitter
    • 1

Unlock all of the Jeepicon1.png Grand Cherokee's doors and open the driver's side door. Keeping the door open, lock it using the manual lock on the door itself.

    • 2

Put the manual key into the ignition and switch it to the "On" or "Run" position, whichever applicable, without starting the engine.

    • 3

Point the remote at the receiver (located by the little bulb on the caricon1.png ceiling) and hold down the "Lock" button for up to 5 seconds.

    • 4

When the driver's side door unlocks, you know the remote has been programmed correctly. If you are only programming one remote, jump to the next step. If not, manually re-lock the driver's side door and repeat steps 5 and 6 using each remote you would like to program and then continue.

    • 5

Turn the key to the "Off" position and turn the ignition on immediately. This must be done within 20 seconds of programming the last remote. You're finished!

I THINK YOUR RIGHT! CHECK FUSES AND RELAYS FOR POWER ALSO IF THE POWER SUPPLY TO STARTER IS NOT A GOOD CONNECTION THEN IT WILL FAIL TO EVEN TRY TO START. GOOD LUCK!

Try gently tapping the starter motor with a hammer or bar. There may be a bad contact in the sollenoid or the starter motor brushes worn to their limit. Tapping may give you a tempory fix if the problem lies in the starter motor.

Car won't start

check starter relay in the power distribution center, then check main power lead at starter 12v all the time and small lead on starter 12v with key turned to start. If there is power there, starter is bad.
Ignition switches do fail, but far more infrequently than the items I listed. Good luck.....any additional questions, ask!
