I have a 1999 Daewoo Lanos that is very hard to start. I suspect it might be the fuel filter which seems difficult to remove! Is there an easy way to change it?

Your injectors need cleaning. Try some fuel injector cleaner pour it in the fuel tank and drive around. Change your air filter. Clean Throttle Body with carburetor cleaner.
Remove the idle air control motor (IAC) and clean it well and the hole it comes out of with throttle body spray cleaner, or carburetor cleaner spray. Then re-install and try it. Careful with small "O" ring if it's there, just make sure it's still there when you put it back on.
start the vehicle, undo one of the battery cables. if the vehicle dies it is most likely the altenator, if the vehicle keeps running then the battery is most likely the culprit
