SOURCE: car starts run's 3 seconds shuts down

Your car is equipped with a system called PASSKEY standard on all GM cars and light trucks, try the following procedure to reset the system, the battery being dead will trigger the system.

PASSKEY LOCKOUT RESET GM CARS 1999 UP
1) Put the key in the ignition and turn to the "ON" position. Leave it that way for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes turn the key and take it out. Repeat this process (2) more times (3 times, 30 minutes total) This should reset the passlock system to recognize your key.

SOURCE: 2005 F-150 Need To Reset

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

As a first course of action please disconnect the positive battery connector and let it sit for atleast 5mins. then reconnect it again. This should reset the system.

After reconnection of the positive battery connector please insert the key and turn it on ON position but don't crank it then turn OFF. Perform this ten times and on the 10th time crank the engine.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

SOURCE: what does the code 1686 mean for a jeep grand cherokee

you have dash lamps acting funny?
diesel engine? or gas, and what displacement? 4.0 , 4.7
P1686

did the immo lamp glow.
did you scan the PCM and see if 1685 (wrong key code)
1686, rigth out of fsm

Trouble Code: P1686 4.7L
No SKIM Bus Messages Received
Number of Trips to Set Code: 1
PCM details.
Trouble Code Conditions:
Engine started; and the PCM did not detect any MIC (I/P Cluster) messages over the Data Bus circuit for 20 seconds.
Possible Causes:

  • Data Bus circuit from MIC to the PCM is damaged or it is open
  • Instrument Cluster is damaged or has failed
  • PCM unable to communicate with the Instrument Cluster
  • PCM has failed
this means, the PCM can not talk to the I/P cluster puter.
comm fail.
even wilder guess is PCM talks to KEY via cluster so if cluster dead
so be key.
bad fuses ?

the FSm dont cover defeating any alrarms or IMMO less crooks read it. so...... google it.

I have a 2004 Chevy Impala and for some reason I keep having to jump it, the battery and Alternator plus the starter. It checks out good so I was wondering what it could be?

Question edited for a bit of clarity.

You are being given some really bad information.

If the anti-theft was active it wouldn't start.

You don't jump the Alternator, it is a generating device.

You don't jump the starter, you jump the battery.

It sounds like you have Parasitic Draw.

Buick century 3.1 2000 security light staying on car wont crank what can that be

It's the anti-theft system . (SECURITY ) Keeps vehicle from being stolen !
Important: If the wrong ignition key is used in an attempt to start the vehicle, a Data Trouble Code (DTC) will be set and the Body Control Module (BCM) will not send a fuel enable or starter enable message to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) for three minutes even if the correct ignition is used.
The Pass-Key II?® Theft Deterrent system prevents vehicle theft by disabling the starter motor and fuel system. If the Body Control Module (BCM) dose not identify the use of the correct ignition key to start the vehicle, the (BCM) will communicate a message to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) which will disable the crank relay and fuel delivery to the engine.
When the (BCM) identifies the use of the correct ignition key (resistor pellet) to start the vehicle, the (BCM) will send a fuel enable and starter enable message to the (PCM) which will allow the vehicle to start.
Your best bet would be have it towed to a qualified repair shop !

How to reset anti-theft on a 2000 alero

The security, antitheft or lock picture/icon is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM (Theft Deterrent Module). These 3 parts are in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, then these parts are sending signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, the car misinterprets this as an attempt at theft and goes into antitheft mode. The car thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. This is why the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle. This link explains it pretty well.

My car wont start even with a jump it click's a few time's while trying to start it then it does nothing it act's like the battery does when it's dead but i had it checked out and they say it's good what...

If you can borrow a draw test meter from a tool loaner Program, you can check the starter draw. A weak link is the starter Relay which can be jumped with battery cable jumpers.

By using the by-pass method, you are working around a potential problem with the anti-theft system. The anti-theft system reduces battery voltage to your starter to around 7 Volts so that the car can not be stolen.

If you find that the starter turns normally when bypassing the Relay, you may have either a bad starter Relay or the antitheft has activated. Take a Voltage reading on the main wire (between the Relay and starter) to see if it is at 12 Volts when cranking.. If voltage is at 12, then the starter is probably bad if it just clicks.

Car ran fine night before...next morning would not start. Replaced fuel pump, filter and switched relay but still had no luck. What else should we do?

CHECK TO SEE IF SECURITY LIGHT IS STAYING ON WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY TO RUN POSITION(NOT START) NORMAL OPERATION IS SECURITY/ANTI THEFT LIGHT ON FOR A FEW SECONDS THEN SHOULD GO OFF. IF ITS STAYING ON VEHICLE IS IN THEFT MODE WHICH WILL DISABLE THE FUEL INJECTORS BECAUSE CAR THINKS ITS GETTING STOLEN. MOST LIKELY CAUSE FOR THIS IS PASSLOCK SYSTEM(SENSOR IS LOCATED IN STEERING COLUMN)

My 2001 olds silhouette van will run great for months and then all of a sudden will not start for no apparent reason. It will make a weird electrical noise and the gages will run backwards. How do we fix...

Not sure about the noise you are hearing. These types of problems are really tough when thay cannot be duplicated. It sounds like you have a corroded or poor connection to the starter or battery. I would remove the cable ends to the battery and clean very well wether they looked bad or not. Look for any ground wires that are bolted to the block of the engine or the firewall of the engine compartment and clean/reconnect as needed. Check to see if any are loose as this can cause a poor connection as well. Do the same at the starter. Good Luck.
