What if any problem could this create as far as other components? A wiring diagram shows a circuit going to AC/Heater control, the Ignition switch and Data Link connector. I think the instrument cluster is part of it also.

are you talking about the wires that connect the car harness to the gauge cluster with the 2 big plugs?

it sounds like you got 2 problems...the cruise and radio buttons sound like a bad clockspring......the overhead console problem sounds like a bad ambient temp sensor located behind the grill. if it is too cold out the ac will not run

Hello, You can obtain a 2004 Ram Factory Service Manual with all of that information available from Promanuals.net. The reason why it may be so important is because right before the removal instructions the service manual has diagnostic instructions to try. There are numerous pages on removing the instrument cluster, and cluster bezel.
(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative
cable. (For Airbag)
(2) Remove the cluster bezel from the instrument
panel. (Refer to 23 - BODY/INSTRUMENT PANEL/
CLUSTER BEZEL - REMOVAL).
(3) Remove the four screws that secure the instrument
cluster to the instrument panel structural support
(Fig. 5).
(4) Pull the instrument cluster rearward far
enough to access and disconnect the instrument
panel wire harness connectors for the cluster from
the connector receptacles on the back of the cluster
housing.
(5) Remove the instrument cluster from the instrument
panel.

These vans have had issues with the PIN connections to the instrument clusters. With time the solder on the main PIN connection will begin to fail. The good news this may be repaired at home. First you'll need to remove the instruments. To do so remove the dash components from around the instruments then the (4) screws) that hold the instruments in place. Carefully detach the wire connection from the back of it; take to a well lit area. Look for a PIN with a failed solder joint (this will appear as a slight black or grey circle. If found apply heat and let solder be gin to flow; the allow to cool and reassemble. If you look at my history you'll see I've helped others with this issue. Haynes or Chilton Repair Manuals ($20-$30) are available at most auto parts store. However these are general wiring diagrams. Go to alldatadiy.com for specific wiring diagrams from bumper-to-bumper and everything in between. Cost is ($20-$30) for full 12-months.
