My 2001 chevy venture van runs out of gas with almost 5 gallons of gas in the tank.
My 01 Chevy venture just got a new fuel pump put in gas gauge still isn't working proper so had another fuel pump put in same problem. My relay fuse is good fuel pump fuse is good. I have to have my wires checked, make sure my sensor on top of pump connector wires are good. What else can I be looking for?
You had fuel pump replaced , did the fuel level sensor get replaced also ? Fuel pump has nothing to do with fuel level .
First off you need to know how the fuel level info. gets to the instrument cluster so it can move the fuel gauge needle .The fuel level sensor is an input to the engine computer . Hooking up a scan tool, professional scan tool, an checking for DTC'S diagnostic trouble codes in all the computers would be the first thing i would do . Not just replacing the fuel pump 2 times.
Fuel System Indicator(s)
Low Fuel Indicator
The PCM receives fuel level information from the fuel sensor. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the PCM indicating the fuel level information. The IPC uses the fuel data received from the PCM and a software program to determine the proper fuel level to display. If the fuel level is below 9.5% or E, the LOW FUEL message and Fuel Pump ISO illuminate (there is a 30 second delay before the light turns on) in the message center. The IPC also sends a message to the BCM to chime the audible warning 4 times when this condition exists.
You people have no clue with what your dealing with, suggest you take it to a qualified repair shop that does .
Fuel Gage
The IPC displays the fuel level as determined by the PCM. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the PCM indicating the fuel level percent.
DTC P0462
Circuit Description
The fuel level sensor changes resistance based on fuel level. The PCM monitors the signal circuit of the fuel level sensor in order to determine fuel level. When the fuel tank is full, the sensor resistance is high and the PCM senses a high signal voltage. When the fuel tank is empty, the sensor resistance is low and the PCM senses a low signal voltage. The PCM uses the signal circuit of the fuel level sensor in order to calculate the total remaining fuel (%) in the tank. The PCM sends the fuel level percent via the class 2 serial data circuit to the IPC in order to control the fuel gage. The fuel level information is also used for misfire and EVAP diagnostics.
Install a scan tool.
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
With a scan tool, observe the Fuel Level parameter in the PCM EVAP data list.
DTC P0463
Disconnect C305.
Connect the J 33431-C Signal Generator and Instrument Panel Tester between the signal circuit of the fuel level sensor and the sensor ground circuit of the fuel level sensor (male terminal side).
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Important: Verify the J 33431-C resistance settings with a DMM.
Vary the resistance on the J 33431-C from 40-250 ohms. Refer to Fuel Level Specifications in order to convert from resistance to fuel gage display.
Does the fuel gage display the correct fuel level?

if the remote works but the switches inside the van doesn't then the most likely fix would be the switch, tthough it is strange that both would quit. the place too start would be pop out the switch with a small screwdriver and disconnect the connector. the top left pin and the top middle pin is the unlock circuit in the switch. check continuity with your multimeter while pressing unlock. if no continuity, then get a small piece of wire and jump those pins in the connector,( the top right and center ) you should hear the doors unlock, then you know for a fact that the switch is bad. the unlock is used more than the lock so it is a more common failure. you can also use a continuity test on the rear wiper switch. though it is more common that the motor would stick from not being used. hope this helps if you have any more questions i am glad to help... dustang

Well if theres power going to the relay but not out, then you need a new relay. If theres power in and out of the relay, you might need a new fuel pump. The electric fuel pumps inside the tank are actually lubricated by the fuel as it pumps it, and if it runs dry long enough, it can burn out the pump

1st ensure the fuses are all good and there is fuel in the vehicle and your not getting a false reading by tapping on the tank ..does it sound Hollow oe Empty / another way is turn on the key and listen for the pump to work a slight humming should be heard ...if so locate the fuel bar and cap screw depress the valve shielding your eyes with say a towell and see if gas dispurses make sure the key is on while doing this if no gas is there or fuel pump is heard then it may be either a bad ground to the unit or the fuel pump itself corroded connections will contribute to this as well unclipping and reclipping the connection togeather should allow a better connection

Hi:
Your tank sending unit is bad. Unfortunately, it is part of the fuel pump assembly, and the part costs around $400, give or take. plus installation labor. It is an all too common problem on GM vehicles, as I have had to change it on my last 2 GMs. If you do an internet search you will find plenty of others in the same boat!
