I would check the ignition control module. It may be firing and missing intermitinly
SOURCE: how do I replace front rotors on a '03 Mazda mpv
MOST DO IT YOURSELF BOOKS EXPLAIN THE BRAKE PAD REMOVAL. WHEN THE CALIPER IS OFF THE ROTOR IS HELD ON BY TWO PHILLIPS SCREWS TO KEEP THINGS "TOGETHER" ON THE HUB. IT MAY ALSO BE TIGHT TO THE HUB, BUT IT WILL COME OFF.
ALWAYS REPLACE WITH NEW ROTORS SINCE MOST OF THE WORK IS DONE BY THE FRONT (DISK) BRAKES. SHOPS LIKE TO "TURN" OR RESURFACE ROTORS BECAUSE THEY HAVE THE MACHINE PAID FOR AND CAN CHARGE YOU THE PRICE OF NEW ROTORS AT A PARTS STORE FOR A LITTLE LABOR.
Testimonial: "I found that there were no screws to remove, however I did find that if you use the screw hole to screw in a 5/16-18 bolt the rotor pops right off"

Hi
In most case's it will be the spark plugs which will need to be replaced. Try to do these asap as it will lead to more further problems. If you have done this then check when air/fuel filters were last replaced and replace these.
Hope this helps, let me know how you get on.
