To avoid confusion, remove and tag the spark plug wires one at a time, for replacement.
If a distributor is not keyed for installation with only one orientation, it could have been removed previously and rewired. The resultant wiring would hold the correct firing order, but could change the relative placement of the plug towers in relation to the engine. For this reason it is imperative that you label all wires before disconnecting any of them. Also, before removal, compare the current wiring with the accompanying illustrations. If the current wiring does not match, make notes to reflect how your engine is wired.

It would be very helpful when you are asking for help with your vehicle if you would mention WHICH ENGINE your Jeep is equipped with. In many cases, since we are talking about a Jeep, it is also necessary to know if it is 2-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive. This makes a HUGE difference for many things including engine controls, transmission controls, and other components because even the wiring diagrams are different for these vehicles. (80% of all the problems that you will most likely have with your Jeep will be electrical or involve electrical/electronic components.)

With all that said,
On the V-8 4.7L (VIN code N) engine, the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) is mounted into the engine block above the starter motor.
On the L-6 4.0L (VIN code S) engine, the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) is mounted to the transmission bellhousing at the left/rear side of the engine block.

If it is the original transmission, you can contact the Mercury dealer (parts dept) with the V.I.N. # and they can pull it up on the computer

It has a plug in the end of the case by the passenger side cv shaft. Start the engine and remove the plug. Fill the trans thru the fill cap until oil runs from the hole. Let me know if you need more info. The transmission is a 4T40E Right? 4 speed?

After refill check oil level, and hope this helps.

If you look at your vehicle ID Tag inside the drivers side door it should give you a transmission code. If not, the VIN should have included the trans code in it. If you call the Chevrolet dealership with it they can tell you what you have.

Good rule of thumb is 15-18 inch lbs.More important is doing them evenly,like in an x type pattern.Good luck,
