How likely is it to have a head gasket leak or cracked block? and if nothing is added like antifreeze will it crack the block?

2006 Chevy Cobalt Leaks out any antifreeze and it was overheating and running rough. White smoke is coming out from under the hood and underneath the car. Hasnt been driven since. Please help. It is a four cylinder and like I said about the mechanic, his phone number is disconnected after paying him thousands for repairs on several cars. This same fraudulent mobile mechanic added RTV stop leak, could that harm the car?

No coolant will trash an engine in no time. I don't use any stop leak. I replace the bad part. You have been taken. My neighbor did this also. His was different. He asked me first. I told him he had a ground problem. I would look at it. He had $500+ just in tow bills back and forth, let alone the shop charges. Finally he asked again. $15 and 30 minutes later he had his car back. Hate to say it but, a lot of garages aren't much better.

YES
antifreeze is needed in every engine as the additives in the antifreeze stop the water boiling at the cylinders, stop corrosion of the aluminium, stops the water freezing down to -10 C , lubricates the pump seal
Will it crack the block and heads ---most definitely as water expands on freezing and as it has no place to expand to and weak sections of the cast will fail and as cylinders and linings are less than 1.4 " thick that is what breaks
your cheapest fix now is a good serviceable engine from a rear ender from the wreckers /junk yard
OH -- and yes-- only use accredited mechanics from accredited service centres in the future

Going through alot of oil and antifreeze.... have oil where my spark plug is

The engine can burn alot of coolant before you see any smoke.
And having a cooling leak in the engine could cause it to run hot at times.
If you are adding coolant every week and don't see any leaks, the engine has to be burning it. Most of the time it is a blown head gasket and cracked head or block.

could be just head gasket and bad exhaust manifold gasket (coolant leaks past head gasket into exhaust port then leaks out of exhaust manifold gasket)
or it possible that head is cracked too
Only way to know for sure is to remove head and inspect it

You have a blown head gasket or cracked head. Have the head pulled and look for gasket breaks. If no gasket breaks, have the head tested for cracks. If good, also check for surface warping and reinstall with new gasket. let us know if you need more help.

Loosing antifreeze but no leaks

The loss of antifreeze with no apparent leaks could be the sign of many things including blown head gasket, cracked tank, or leaking water pump. I would lean toward a head gasket first. Have you checked the oil for signs of antifreeze? A head gasket won't leak until the system is under pressure and running at normal temperature. You could also have a cracked head although that is pretty rare. Check the oil and plugs for signs of anti freeze. Also check the tanks on the side of the radiator they could be cracked which only leak while under pressure. Check all hose connections and if so equipped tranny cooler lines to make sure they are all attached correctly.

the water jackets are part of the casting of the engine block they surround the cylinders water jackets dont corrode away they clog or if they are leaking u have a cracked engine block if u are getting antifreeze into oil and steam out of exhaust more than likely its a head gasket-- because if u crack a water jacket that usually means a blown engine and need to replace or rebuild ---and the additive usually works for radiator leaks and some minor head gasket leaks

I have a 2001 jeep grand cherokee losing antifreeze no leaks.

This is a hands on diag. If no leaks can be found then the coolant has to be going out the tailpipe. Chances are you have a cracked head or a cracked block. New gasget only temporarily sealed the crack. But then we are just guessing.

Leaks

the only thing that causes this is a blown head gasket or a cracked block, the head gasket is the most common problem, the block being cracked rare/
