1991 Mitsubishi Might Max Timing Belt

Just purchased a 1991 Mitsubishi Mighty Max, 5 speed manual trans with 133K miles on it.

Couple of questions:

1. Do these trucks have a timing belt or chain. If a belt then when should it be changed?

2. If a belt does the Haynes manual provide enough detail for the shade tree mechanic to replace?

3. If Haynes does not provide the required detail then does anyone have a step by step on how to do it?

Thanks
Brian

Timing chain when you get a variance in timing easy to see with a timing light haynes manual should be sufficient

Why 1991 mitsubishi mighty max has no injector pulse 2.4 engine?

The problem may be a cam/crank position sensor that is causing this. Check that the cam shaft is turning ( broken timing belt/chain)

if it has a cable for clutch you need to adjust it. if its hydralic then the master cylinder may be not bleeding off properly when cold or slave sticks when cold. you need to measure pedal free play that is how far pedal goes down before resistance is felt there needs to be 1/2 to 1 inch or so free play to make sure that the release bearing isnt riding on the pressure plate [would be the same as riding the clutch] the 1/2 inch higher than brake pedal probem can be adjusted on the pedal stop but shouldnt be the problem. of course the clutch could be just plain worn out to.

Torque specs for mighty max

Per my Chilton's manual tehe bolts should be (cold engine) 65 to 72 FT. Pnds., the cam shaft bearing bolts should be 8x25 = 15 - 19 Ft pnds and the 8x65 should be 14 - 15 Ft Pnds.

The sequence is as follows for the (10 ) head bolts:

7 - 5 - 2 - 4 - 10

9 - 3 - 1 - 6 - 8

I hope this may help,
Tom

Engine backfire's when you let off gas but idle's fine

Engines backfire when timing has slipped. You might need a new timing belt. \

Timing belt goes from Crankshaft on bottom of engine to Camshaft on top of engine. Both have to be synchronized to the correct timing.

Check repair manual or internet for correct timing. You'll probably have to find top dead center on first piston.
