if the "hold-in" coil for the compressor shaft is good, take a "butterfly" impact wrench (due to space limitations), then remove shaft nut and very carefully put nut on shaft loose and rap the end of the shaft with light forward pressure applied to clutch, it sometimes works this way, otherwise you'll need to rent an A/C clutch removal tool at a parts store, but remember be very careful how hard you rap shaft and do it with something like hard plastic/wood

Chevy 2004 blazer ac stoped working abruptly and stops the engine if you turn on the ac could you just replace the clutch if that is what is defective? instead of the whole compressor and all the other...

I mworking on my blazer AC unit now . You have a problem with the compressor clutch or the compresser Its likely the clutch its supposed to cycle about 8 times per minute . So it goes on then off 8 times per munite this is normal . However if the clutch dosen't spin then the belt will drag on the clutch pulley this will stall the engine until the belt wares out but this will damage every part that the belt rides on . The water pump the alternator powersteering pump and belt tenisinor not to mention the belt .It sounds like your clutch is seized try not to run it until you can figure out why the clutch isn't spining

How do you go about disconnecting the clutch on an a/c compressor in a 1996 chevy blazer?

Removel:
  • Remove the serpentine belt and unbolt the compressor from it's mounts and tilt it up so you can get to the front easier.
  • Use the clutch removal tool to pull off the clutch.
  • Remove the large snap ring in front of the pulley.
  • Spray some WD40 in the hub area and remove the pulley from the compressor. It's best to use the universal puller.
  • If you don't have the puller bolt the compressor back down to it's mount and carefully pry the pulley away from the compressor. Be careful and don't stress the gas lines. The pulley bearing is pressed onto the aluminum casting of the compressor body so you are not prying against the compressor shaft. The bearing can be hard to remove because the steel bearing in contact with the aluminum frame will cause a dissimilar metal weld.
  • Clean off all the surfaces and threads using a wire brush and / or some sand paper. Note: The white circular object is the magnetic coil that activates the A/C.
Instalation:
  • Place the new hub on the frame and tap into place with a piece of wood or use the special puller tool which will also press the new hub into the frame.
  • Press the hub in until the groove is exposed enough to install the large snap ring.
  • Install the large snap ring. Make sure it is seated all the way around.
  • Install the clutch assembly taking care to position the shaft key in the compressor slot. Use the special installer tool to press the clutch into place. Leave between .020 and .030 air gap between the hub and the clutch.

Good luck and keep me posted, Be glad to answer any questions you may have and if you need help replacing the coil also, (clutch core)

AC Clutch in Buick Lesabre

Rent the clutch tool from the parts house. Then remove the nut in the center of the clutch. It should have a washer as well. Set these aside and install the clutch removal tool per directions in the box. Remove the front hub with tool and be very careful so you don't drop the small group of flat washers that are inside. It is these washers that determine the space in the clutch gap. Simply add or remove washers to adjust the gap. Once the gap is set then re-assemble and test. Hope this helps get you cool again. Good luck. If you feel that this solution has answered you question then please rate this solution. Thanks cj2176.

Replacing AC clutch

You can usually change the AC clutch with the compressor still on the vehicle. It takes a specilized ac clutch removal tool to take the old clutch assembly off. By the time you buy a puller set you can have it changed cheaper at a shop. Unless you can rent a puller somewhere such as some auto parts houses rent tools. It really is not a job for a novice mechanic.

A/c clutch removal

You might have to go to a parts house and buy the clutch removal tool. It is a puller that screws into the hub and pulls it off. There is another tool for pressing it back on. When reinstalling make sure the air gap between pulley and hub is correct.
