My 97 cavalier will die after being driven for a while. someone said it is a sensor located behind the coil pack. i need to know what this sensor is called.

Who manufactured the tach? Maybe they have a web site and instructions? Did you tach come with instructions?
I looked at autometer instructions for your vehicle, have to use an adapter, it ties into the power wire for your coil pack. The adapter costs about 97 bucks, not including tax.
Different tach manufacturers may have different hook-ups?

There are wires that go from coil pack harness to the crank position sensor...hope this helps.
This is a job for the dealer or cerified mechanic. The front cover and timing chain needs to be remove to access the water pump mounted behind the engine. The pump is driven by the timing chain and timing will need to be reset using special tools.
On 2.2L 4CYL VIN[4] It's located on rear side of cylinder block below coil module. On 2.4L 4CYL VIN[T] It's located on front side of cylinder block almost dead center.
I would check to make sure your spark plug wires are not coming loose from the coil packs on the back of the engine, i had the same problem with a '97 cavalier and then the check engine light started to flash meaning it had a catalyst threatening mis-fire.
also check to make sure you have the correct order, these things will run with the wires mixed up but they are gutless.
a new fuel filter might not hurt either, they are easy to change located near the back axle, one nut and a quick connect fitting.
