...which means that the gearbox only works in forth gear and all the speed light on the dashboard turn on. The diagnostics say "open circuit or short to earth".
The story is that the widows were left open in a storm and the space under the passenger seat (left hand drive car) filled with water.
I found a comment which says the "16-pin connector on gearbox between valve body and harness" may be moist and the source of the problem. I don't know how to get at the 16-pin connector though.
Any ideas? A6 Quattro

I've removed the transmission computer from my '99 passat, which is also under the carpet on the passenger side. It wasn't easy to get at everything. I just removed the plastic trim pieces and lifted up on the carpet the best that I could. I never got the carpet fully pulled back to expose the computer, so I stuck my hands under the carpet and disconnected everything by feel. Most large VW/Audi connectors have some sort of retention mechanism that also works to remove the connector (I think that on these connectors, there is a lever that you move to disengage the connector).

Thanks Rusabus,
I hope the the computer didn't get dammaged by water.
I am bringing the car to the Audi garage tomorrow to see what they say.
