I can't find anything online about the parts or where he could get them, other than maybe trying to search a junkyard. I can't seem to find any wiring diagrams for the climate control. Is it easy to open the 20 pin connector? What harness would he need to replace if he goes that route?
I have used a flat blade smallest jeweler's screw driver to release connector contacts before when not having the correct contact release tool. The release tools are basically a handle with a thin walled tube at each end, one for socket contacts, the other end for pins. A picture or two of the connector and contacts from each end would be helpful.
I hope this is of some help to you.

There is no remote wire on these newer trucks....03 and up....u have to buy the harness....although i didnt....i have an 03 gmc sierra and just pulled the schematic and matched the wires. And there is no programming to do on an aftermarket stereo.....I work for GMC and we cant program aftermarket stereos......if u buy the right harness ...and its over $100 then everything should work just fine.....and this does not disarm ur alarm system either....mine still works fine....hope this helps

Hi Anonymous, we want to help you with your question, but we need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box?
can he put a pin down the side of each plug hole and ease the pin out carefully. may be able to but the pins and re crimp wires.
We have tried using a small pen to release the wires from the connector to no avail. Tried going in the back along side the wire as well as the front of the connector in hopes of releasing a clip or retainer
