My 02 venture will start and idle smoothly, however upon acceleration it will misfire, choke down, backfire and run rough, when I let off the gas it idles very smoothly.

Hello. It seems your PT Cruiser might have low fuel pump pressure. This will cause a backfire/misfire condition upon 'mild' acceleration. 'Gentle' acceleration, your car will run 'decent'. Good luck and keep me informed; if you want to.

Take an have diagnostics run . Could be a vacuum leak , mass air flow sensor problem , If fuel injector's where the problem it wouldn't smooth out while accelerating > Have fuel trims check , O2sensors . EGR valve stuck open a little . If the check engine light was on an had a random misfire code P0300 could be fuel injector. or a specific cylinder misfire.

you have a bed coil (s). That's what causes misfire. Your DIC should be specific about which cylinder coil you're having trouble with.

if your car is losing coolant or water it could be head problems or head gasket blown,if not losing water or coolant,,then my be distributier cap or leads ???mick

Pull the vac hose going to fuel pressure regulator and see if it has fuel in it. If it does replace it. Just fixed one with multiple misfire codes.

Could be anything. Can you tell me what you've checked? the more info the better.

Check the list ....it may help


Engine misfires periodically =

Ignition coil layer shorted > Replace
Spark plugs fouling > Clean or install hotter type plug
Spark plug(s) insulator nose leaking > Replace
Fuel injector(s) defective > Replace
Powertrain control module faulty > Replace

I had the same issue with my venture. It turned out to be the number 5 plug wire, backside of engine ended up breaking out of the plug carrier and burning in half on the manifold. Your best bet is to trace all the wires to start off with and change the plugs. If that doesn't help, it may be internal. Good luck
