can only take a shot in the dark but sounds like dust or a spring off in the magazine holder. hard one to call without seeing it.

Metra makes a preamp harness that you can use if you have the partial Bose system. My A4 had that (where the front speakers were run off of the headunit with speaker-level feed, but the deck put a line level signal to a rear amp to power the speakers). This harness would let you use the aftermarket deck with your factory speakers, if you have the partial Bose system. Best bet is to do a Google search for "Metra 2001 Passat" or something like that and I'm sure it'll show up.

Disconnect Battery As with any tasks on a Mercedes or other vehicle, when you are dealing with disconnecting and connecting electrical systems, you should always disconnect the negative battery terminal. This will ensure your safety and prevent you from getting an electric shock. Pry the dash panel from the dashboard. There are two levers on the sides of the Mercedes factory-installed CD changer. Pulling down on the levers will release the radio from the bracket in the dash. You will have to remove the wiring and the antenna cable from the back of the system. You can replace it with a newer version of a CD changer or insert the same one, once it has been repaired. Slide the player into the installation sleeve of the stereo dock. Pay attention to where the wires were removed and connect the unit's wiring to the leads in the wiring harness adapter. Connect the antenna cable lead into the antenna detector. Snap on the dash panel to complete the removal and installation. Buy Custom Car Parts.

SOURCE: My CD players says check magazine when magazine is already in there.....
My 1999 Beetle did the same thing. I didn't have any luck repairing it, even tried a different magazine but nothing helped. Fortunately I found someone local selling a used trunk-mounted CD changer for $10, so I bought that and it worked like a champ.
So for me, I ended up having to replace the CD changer to fix this problem. Hope you have better luck.
