Have you checked thermostat? My old escort got hot in traffic ques up to boiling over, and it was fine after changing the thermostat was cheap at the time , a few years ago, and was easy to do myself.
ignition module , that the coil packs sit on ,was the problem on my car. had the same symptoms .ran fine till it warmed up then it started missing like crazy
if both headlights went out at the same time, check your fuses. because high beams use more power than headlights, they are often on a separate fuse. if fuses are fine, replace the headlights.
