SOURCE: changing rear shocks on a 1990 jag

No. But if can't get it on a lift or high enough to work under comfortably..it will be very awkward. The calipers get in the way when you are removing the springs and shocks as a unit. You can move the part and get it out and down, but you will need to remove the rear wheels and let the rear springs hang down.
Make sure you have a good spring compressor to get the old springs off....in most cases it is the springs that go soft and not the shocks...
Don't assume that it is the shocks unless you know for sure they are bad.

SOURCE: my 1989 jag xj6. the rear suspension (shocks) are down

Hi Verbatum

Yes, replacing the self leveling rear shockers with gas shocks, is the way to go.

The self leveling system was notoriously problematic.

Due to either to the leveling sensor going faulty, and making the car go up and down, whilst sitting at the lights. ( Do not be surprised to see that yours has been disconnected. )
Other problems are loud knocks over the big bumps, and finally oil leaks from the shockers.

Yes Jaguar in there wisdom, did not make things easy, and new gas shockers will not match your old springs.

I do have all the Jaguar part numbers somewhere for this job, if you want to keep it all Jaguar.
( let me know and I will have a look !)

I have seen in the past, Modification Kits being offered in England, but would have to get back to you with source.

I see you are in Canada , and I am in Spain, and not familiar with your spares situation out there.

You will be requiring 2 Gas Shockers, 2 Springs and retaining collets, and plates.

I hope I have been of help.

Good Luck

John.

How many miles will you get out of the v12 motor in a 1989 xjs? Im looking to buy one but it has 250000km on the clock

I would get complete set of maintenance records for that one. 250k is alot for a jag especially a V12. That one is either running on borrowed time or has been meticulously taken care of.
